Anyone else see the Orange Ads in Dublin, mainly on bus stops? Are orange comming? Is it just someone in Dublin bus, or their ad company, trying to annoy us? one of the ads say 3P text messages. others are saying something to do with free cinema tickets on a Wedensday, and an other offers free minuites on evenings and weekends. there is no Orange.ie, and no mention of Ireland on Orange.com. Any ideas?

Yeah I saw those ads as well ... Very Very Bizzar ... A while back I heard that Orange were looking to piggyback on an irish network but nothing has been confirmed.

The only ad I have seen is the one encouraging you to top up in an Orange store ... WTF????

    Can anyone explain these ads?

I don't know BUT Orange in Hong Kong are operated by Hutchenson (sp) Wampoah (sp!?!) HW.

    HW own 3 in Ireland.

3 own a 3G network licence in Ireland.

3G has to be rolled out soon here or they lose their licence.

    But as I said - I don't really know.

Orange and Hutchinson are now seperate companies. Hutchinson Whampao owned Orange. Mannesman in Germany bought Orange. Vodafone bough Mannesman and had to sell off Orange as part of a rulling by the competition authority. France Telecom bought Orange. I think anyway :/

If you read the ad, it mentions local calls to UK landlines. It seems to be a mistake.

I think it's a more of a case of the ads being accidentally sent over here - who knows, there might be Meteor ads going up in some place in England with people saying "who are Meteor? Are they coming to the UK?" :)

    I think I'll ask Orange!

yea, its a bit stange that. and its not like there is only one or anything, there are shead loads! on the 75 bus route, i seen about 4 today, and on the 54 bus route there are 5 bus stops with ads on them. i havent gotten to read the small print on the ads since im usually on the bus, but it does say 3p, not cent. i have seen them for the last 2 weeks, and if it was a mistake, you would think that they would be taken down quickly, not staying up for that amount of time. strange...

The reply I got from Orange on Monday wasn't terribly enlightening...

    :D:D

OMG ....It was all one big mistake. Some TWIT in Orange was supposed to send the advertising campaign to Northern Ireland but sent it to the ROI instead  Unbelievable stuff ...

There is an article in the Sunday Trisune on this today in their business section under the title "red faces at orange"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 934 ✭✭✭lotas

damn anyway! i was hoping to get a new phone provider, plus get access to some of them SPV phones cheaper, like the C500. i have the smartphone 2 or the SPV200, but the C500 is nice. plus you get it cheaper cause of the contract. anyway, pity...

And yet the adverts are still up... are they trying to get their money's worth out of the things? I wonder how long they've leased the ad space...

3 are likely to act very aggresively when the launch (probably in the spring). If the UK experience is anything to go by they will offer a huge number of minutes for low monthly line rental.

one interesting thing about this story though is the lack of common sense involved..... I mean, surely SOMEONE along the chain (even the fella's puttin the things up) would've looked at these ads and said "hang on...3p??" and queried it?

I guess the moral of this story is that when money is involved, common sense goes out the window? :D

    Hi All,
I'm just wondering if the mobile operator 'Orange' is set to come to Ireland soon?
The reason I ask is, I've seen an ad on a bus shelter for 'Orange' in Fairview in Dublin (at least I'm almost positive it was for Orange). Has anyone heard about this?

    Cheers,

    DC.

Orange operate as Meteor in Ireland - same parent company. Notice the similarities in both colour schemes.

I see. So are they going to change the branding to 'Orange' in the near future?

I doubt it. The reason why orange was not used in the republic in the first place was because it had cannotations with regards to the north eg orangemen and such. This would have been bad for business in the republic.

I seem to be mistaken on this issue. Meteor and Orange faught for the same license. Check with comreg if you want to be sure about orange coming to ireland.

Hmmmm I don't know what that ad is doing in the bus shelter in Dublin. Its the ad about 'we let you try out new things for free'. Very odd.

Apolgies in advance, but this is complete and utter rubbish!! They are totally different companies..

There is a possiblity that Orange may come to Ireland as a MVNO but I would put the recent adds down to a mess up for the moment.

I think they were actually competing for the second license with Esat.. I think they also raised a few questions as to the legality of the license being granted to Esat and threathened legal action at one stage..

Anyway, Orange are totally seperate company to Meteor. Meteor are owned by Western Wireless which Orange are owned by France Telecom.. The owners of Three used to own Orange but sold it along time ago.

In 1996, Orange plc underwent its first initial public offering with the shares being listed on the London and Nasdaq markets on 2 April 1996. At flotation in London, Orange plc shares were priced at 205 pence. Major shareholders at the time were Hutchison Whampoa with 48%, and British Aerospace with 22%. With a valuation of £2.4 billion, Orange plc became the youngest company to enter the FTSE-100.

In October 1999, Mannesmann AG (the majority shareholder and the leading mobile operator in Germany) announced the acquisition of Orange plc for 0.0965 Mannesmann shares and £6.40 cash per Orange plc share. This valued the fully diluted share capital of Orange plc at £19.8 billion. The offer was completed in February 2000 and Orange was delisted from the London and Nasdaq stock exchanges.

During this time, Mannesmann itself was bought by Vodafone, a deal approved by the European Commission subject to an undertaking from Vodafone to divest Orange plc.

In August 2000, France Télécom acquired Orange plc from Vodafone for a total consideration of £25.1 billion.

Orange plc’s wirefree™ interests were merged with the majority of those of France Télécom to form the new Orange SA group. On 13 February 2001, Orange SA was floated on the EuroNext Paris (formerly Paris Bourse) with a secondary listing in London; the share price was €10 per share in France, £6.40 per share in London.

They actually have quite an interesting history.

    http://www.3ireland.ie/index.html

    check out the tariffs there
    low prices...i doubt it

i think 3 will offer better services for company men, or computer engineers who need high data speeds for "on site" work... but then again, i havent heard anything official

The prices are only provisional and do not, in anyway, represent what their tariffs will be though!!

but in fairness if thats what theyre showing before going live
they wont decrease it to much when they do go live!!

i could be wrong but i havent heard anything different!!

Of course they will 'decrease' hugely. The tarrifs on the website will have no impact on their launch tarrifs. 3 have a reputaion for massively discounting voice calls in most of the markets in which the operate. Expect some decent minute bundles when they launch.
