Hey, I'm looking for some info. on the MMA competition taking in place in UCD. Its being hosted by the BJJ club. I do Taekwondo and I don't have a great amount of fighting experience. I've never entered a full contact competition before. With TKD its all semi-contact. I think the deadline for entering is the 13th of November, which leaves me with two days. Is there a beginners league one can enter? I think it would be a good laugh. I don't mind losing, just don't want to get killed! :D Oh and how much does it cost? Thanks in advance.

    Hey Moss,

UCDBJJ will be hosting the Amateur MMA League when it rolls round to UCD. The League is designed specifically for beginners and aims to create a safe yet realistic environment for all those who want to test their training methods.

As for getting your head bashed in, I doubt it will happen. Since it will be your first time in the league, we'll do our best to match you against other first timers. This way, everybody has a challenging experience, but aren't thrown in at the deep end.

www.mmaleague.com has all the rules, directions and entry forms for you to download. You can email your entry form to ucdbjj@hotmail.com and pay on the day if you'd like (entry fee €20) or you can send it to me (address on the entry form).

    Hope this helps,
    Colm

PS. If anybody else is still unsure of whether they should enter let me tell you I've had a lot of entrants so far from complete beginners and ranging from styles as diverse as Shotokan Karate to TKD to Aikido.

Its safe. Its fun. Its unintimidating. There'll be an almighty shindig on the Saturday night. What else do you need to hear? ;)

What weight bracket will we be seeing you in Moss? (5kg increments from 65kg)

Come on down Moss, it's a great laugh.

Speaking of UCD BJJ, is the club open to ordinary, respectable tax paying citizens or need only no good, workshy students apply to partake in all things sweet and jitzish??

Thanks a million for all the feed back. It sounds great. I'm almost six feet tall but I'm definitly a light-weight. I reckon I'm around 65kg, I know I'm just under ten stone anyway. TKD nationals are on this weekend in cork so I'm heading down to that. Looking forward to this new challenge though! Should be savage. Thanks again.
    Maurice.

Sorry, just one more thing. I've got all the semi- contact sparring gear but I think the rules say you have to wear full contact boxing gloves. Is it too difficult to borrow this kind of equipment on the day? Maurice.

    Moss,

Safety gear you'll need: A gumshield, a groinguard/cup, shin pads with instep cover (or with separate footpad) and vale tudo gloves.

Vale Tudo Gloves are fingerless to allow grappling aswell as striking. I cant see it being a problem borrowing a pair on the day. Sure you can borrow mine if you really need.

Sound out, thanks. I did't think it would be too hard to borrow a pair. Yeah I have the gumshield, groingaurd, shinpads and footpads, just the Vale Tudo glaves I need. I emailed my application to ucdbjj@hotmail.com so it should be all sorted. I suppose I can pay you guys next tuesday after your Bjj session in UCD. Fair play to BJJ club for organising all this by the way. Appreciate it. Thanks again.
    Maurice.

Long time no talk Kev. Hope youre gonna compete on Saturday. You do have Judu and Sumu after all. I knew I missed someone beating the hell out of me on my ironman last night. There is indeed parking in UCD. Colm will give you directions if you give him a shout.

At least hope to have your support on Saturday. :)

    Cheers Dude,

No competing for me, i haven't been to judo or bjj in a while as i still have a sore rib, theres a lump which feels like a rib is sticking out.
    I'll probably be there spectating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

Anyone who is interested in spectating just to let you know that Deadly Buzz will feature over 60 MMA fights from competitors all over the country.

Anybody who is competing we ask you to get their as early as possible so that we can start early. It's for your sake, the earlier you weigh in, the earlier you get to compete, eat chocolate, and hit the bars of Dublin!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,738 ✭✭✭Naos

unfortunetely due to the irish rugby match i cant go out and watch this fine sporting spectacle but can some one tell me if there are any rules against palm shots. actually seeing that there are no head strikes it wont make much difference. but in the super fight(s?) are they allowed?

Yes, slapping is entirely permitted in the superfights.
