External HDs & Mac OSX

Here's an odd problem. I have a pen Drive (1gig, basically a mini external HD), and up until the other day I could plug it into my MacOSX (or WinXP/2k) boxes and it worked fine, OSX mounted and wrote/read from it fine. Handy for transferring large files.

however, only the other day it decided that it couldn't recognise the device inserted. Or said as much - the disk utility still recognised that a FAT-partitioned device was plugged in, and all other aspects of the device it recognised, it just cant mount the device, and doesn't appear on Finder.
It works fine with XP & 2K, so it's not the pen drive. Also ran teh repair utility in both OSs. Help!

    The obvious question:
Have you changed/ installed anything on the mac recently?

No, nothing in any of the machines has changed in the last few days and tested it on another workmate's mac laptop with the same problem. So at first it sounds like the pendrive, but it still works without fault on the windows machines

    Reformat the pendrive.

well before i do anything like that - what kind of partitions can OSX view? FAT and NTFS? And vice Versa, can Windows read OSX partitions.

I don't believe OS X can read or write NTFS (though if certain linux tools get ported it may be able to read it in a limited fashion with some tinkering); I'm 99.9999999% sure that Windows can't read HFS or UFS partitions (from the Mac). FAT/FAT32 is the common denominator; both can read/write it.

FAT, for all it's flaws, works everywhere (if badly). It's the only logical choice for a pen drive (outside of very specific applications, like booting Linux boxes), IMHO.
