    it shows the us price.
the duty is collected for the irsh government and yes you are very likely to have to pay your taxes

    look at: www.revenue.ie
or something more specific like: http://www.revenue.ie/faqs/faq_cat5.htm#q1

You'll get done for duty and VAT, so no, not worth the risk.

If the price in the US is €275 and here is €450....is the VAT and duty likely to be more than the difference???

You can find the duty on some EU webpage, it's a pain in the ass to navigate and I can't remember the address. Whatever duty on cameras is, it will be a lot less that the vat. You have to pay vat and duty on the total cost including shipping, so find that out and multiply by 1.21 (21%). You have a rough estimate of what it will cost, add 10 euro handling fee that GLS charge, and a few euro for whatever the duty will be and you are closer to exact. Now compare that to what you'd pay from pixmania or other EU suppliers where vat is included up front.

Don't compare it to what you'll pay in an Irish shop as you'd be mad to go near one in the first place :)

I bought a mini DV video camera from them before. They do not collect the duty for the government as someone here stated. You will have to pay duty when it arrives. I could only UPS it to Ireland at a cost of €100. The vat and duty i had to pay was around €300. The cost for the camera plus shipping was €1480, plus the Duty and Vat came to around €1800. The same camera in the Sony Centre here was €2800. Luckily though I got the vat back through the company I work for.

I've used them and they're very good but I did get stung for VAT and duty. I had factored that in before I ordered and still saved a bundle on the best European price.

He wasn't recommending that you do - and neither do I.
    I've got stung bigtime before

Try pixmania or search over on www.dpreview.com for other recommended EU stores (where there is no duty and vat is included in the advertised price)

as regards pixmania which seemed to be the most expensive europeon site i found ....price for camera inc shipping is €473....price at bhphotovideo.com including shipping is €284....i think it worth the risk...

I use them all the time, they are way cheaper than here price and strenght of euro against dollar...they give you 4 options for delivery one is fed ex and ups courier service, you will definetly pay duty on these two delivery methods..and the third is via global express which actually links up with the GLS couriers in Europe( I know these are not the best courier crowd) the parcels are delivered to germany and then distributed to Ireland...I ordered 3000dollars worth of equipement throught the Global Express and I did'nt have to pay duty as they marked the box with 30 and 2 small zeros so it actually looked like 30 dollars, anything under 45euro you don't pay duty on, I use this method most of the time as 50-50 chance of not having to pay the duty...although they are slower then ups and fedex...the last method of delivery is airmail which from experience is crap, sds here is **** takes weeks for them to dispatch and deliver and you will pay the duty...

That's the US Postal Service Global Express mail option...right? cos all I see on the delivery options is 'USPS Global Express Mail', 'UPS Express' and 'FedEx Priority'. I've toyed with doing some shopping there but the whole duty thing is too much bloody hassle

UPS Global Express mail is hooked up with GLS...US package airmail service is only offered to small packages...I would still ordered if you wanted them delivered by ups couriers they are the fatest you will have to pay duty and an extra handling charge with them but you won't get it cheaper anywere elese eben with the loading charges...

But if it's sent UPS Global Express then GLS don't get their hands on it surely? I got it direct from the UPS dude last time I ordered from B&H

A guide to duty/VAT on cameras bought from outside the EU:

Cameras 4.2%, Lenses 6.7%, Flashguns 3.2% and accessories depending on what they are range from 3.2%-3.7%

The duty (C) is calculated on the FOB price that is the cost of the goods (A) plus the cost of freight(B) the VAT at 21% (D) is then calculated on the duty plus coat FOB price.

    eg. A+B x duty rate = C

    A+B+C x 21% = D - so what you pay to customs is C+D
