I'm trying to set up a new computer, but it aint working. I think that it might be the power supply, but i'm not too sure.

It gives me the option to post or to enter setup, but at that stage the lights on the keyboard start going like crazy. It doesn't register any input then.

I think its the power supply because it doesn't seem to be sending power to the floppy drive, the floppy drive is a dell and the PSU is a hiperpower.

    Any Ideas?

    Can you give more details?
Like what CPU, Ram, GPU and Expansion Cards your using.
Also the wattage of your PSU.

Obvious thing first is to ensure the psu is correctly connected to the motherboard. Ditto for the hard drives and cd-roms/floppys and any expansion cards.

Only time I had a problem with that board was when I was tweaking the ram. Doubt thats your cause but you could try a cmos clear by removing the cmos jumper and replacing it.

    AMD 3000+
    1 gig corsair ram
    X800 pro

I have a dvd player and hard drive but i've disconnected everything but the fans, and the floppy and the x800.

    I'll try the jumpers.

    Sorry, 470w for the psu.

Okay I assuming your using socket 754 and thats a newcastle chip your using. If your socket 939 then I its the MSI K8N Neo 2 you have and if its a 3000 chip it will be a winchester thats needs the bios flashed for it to work (you would a socket 939 newcastle chip to do this).

Asides 470w should be more than enough from your psu. Unless you got some cheap obscure brand psu which overstates its wattage.

Are you sure the heatskin and fan is working okay. A coming occurance on my abit board when the cpu fan failed was to go............ emmm nuts. Shut down making all sorts of noises

I had the MSI board get angry with me for not connecting the power connector to the graphics card made all sorts of horrible noises.

If you get into the bios or if you get a post can you pause it and tell me if its detecting your ram and cpu?

    Its a socket 754.

I got a Hiper power supply, which has gotten some fairly good reviews but is called horrible things on all the boards.

I cant get past the screen that gives me the option to enter the bios or post, unless i remove the keyboard and then reinsert the keyboard. That starts to load then, giving me :

Verifying DMI Pool Data ..... Update Success

    NVIDIA Boot Agent 197.0402
    Copyright nvidia/intel

Just realised, it doesnt have keyboard support in the bios does it?

Could you talk me through the steps you took when setting up your computer?

Its giving me an i/o error now, but at least it's got the floppy drive powered and reading now.

The NVidia "boot agent" doesn't work for me either - there's a boot options section in the bios - press F11 when booting and change Nvidia Boot Agent to umm.. whatever the most normal sounding one is, I can't remember but there's about 8 options for some reason. Probably "boot from IDE" or "Boot from Hard Disk".

There's USB and PS2 keyboard support in the bios so that won't be it.

Ok, the only time I've seen this is if there is a supervisor password set in the BIOS. Until you enter the password that system is going no-where. Normally the system prompts you for the password, you enter it and away you go but I have seen the flashing k/board thing before with blank screen. It turned out some kid had set a BIOS password. MSI board too...some years ago mind. Anyway, a quick reset of the cmos and all was well. Do the lights flash in order...1-2-3-1-2-3-etc? Where did you get the board?...shop, second-hand, etc.....

Also, have a look here. for lastest bios

I hope you have a PS2 Keyboard not a USB one. The nforce 3 250 boards don't automatically support USB you need to install an OS first and then you will need at least service pack 1 you should then on your MSI motherboard drivers cd be able to refresh the drivers and use usb. If it is a PS2 Keyboard then you could be in more trouble. by any chance would the keyboard be defective.

Its getting abit late for me need to go to bed. I will be online again tomorrow at varios times and if you can't get the problem fixed in the meantime I will post back. I don't have my MSI motherboard using computer set up. will look at the bios tomorrow.

Don't worry if you can't find away MSI have yet to throw a technical problem my way that I can't slove. Anyway need my sleep. good luck for now.

Well, its trying to boot from floppy now, so i could probably get it working on that, but the real problem is that keyboards seem to screw it up. I've tried 3 different ps2 keyboards, but no joy with any of them. 2 had the weird flashing lights, and the other did nothing.

I cant even get past the Choice screen unless i don't have a keyboard hooked up.

I must have been seeing things when I built mine with a USB keyboard and mouse then!

This is wreckin my head. I've got a severe shortage of floppies, so i'll have to pick some up tomorrow. All of the keyboard that i tried (3) are ps2, so its not the keyboard.

The lights just flash on and off, all three at the same time.

Bought the whole thing new from Komplett, even took the shrink wrap off myself.

Thanks for all your help so far everyone, but at this stage, I need sleep.

Thats weird about your usb working. I have had two nforce motherboards Gigabyte and MSI and both needed service pack 1 installed before I could get any usb ports working. My friend could not get his usb keyboard working on the gigabyte motherboard working until he got sp1 installed.

Anywho's best bet for the moment would be try to look up the MSI forum for help.

I got one of these boards recently, I had a similar problem where everytime I'd go to boot it would would give me a keyboard error but I would be able to press F1 to continue. It went away after a while, I know I did a BIOS update around the same time so that's probably what fixed it. You'll probably want to do one anyway to get correct temperature readings. That's supposing of course that you can get it to boot to a floppy.
