Making DivX (.avi) rips from DVD's

Considering doing it from a few DVD's i have got recently. Saving space and all that.

Thing is that when I last did some (a few years ago) it was a nightmare. I had to do video and audio separately and then mix them. Took for ever and was complicated. And the programs that you had to use were very messy.
I'm not gonna bother if things have not moved on.

Anyone know of any programs that rip DVD's easily, reliably and quickly (last is not as important). And with a decent help guide. I just wanna turn out some DivX movies and series without making life hard.

    Any help?

I second Auto Gordian Knot, it is ridiculously easy to make DivX copies using that. You just rip with DVD Decrypter (recommended by the author) or DVD Shrink, feed the resulting file into AGK, select resolution/quality and press a button. It also handles batch jobs very well so you can set it to do several DVDs overnight.

    super dvd ripper.

    http://www.shareup.com/super-dvd-ripper.html

just select the .vob file you want to rip, how many cd's you like to rip is to and it'll even burn the .avi file to cd for you at the end if you so please.

    highly recommended.

If you want DVD->DIVX really simply, I recommend AutoGK, it uses the best free tools and scripts them all together to make a pretty good rip with no effort. Beats all those other more expensive tools anyway.

    Nero Vision 3

converts into .mp4's that use Nero Digital MPEG4 codec and 5.1AAC audio codec

Its Easy To use, You can easily put in up to two subtitle tracks, you can have main 5.1 soundtrack encoded into 6channel aac, and also have an audio track for directrors commentary!!! oh and the quality is excelent! oh and it automatically finds chapters and you can skip to whatever chapter you want when you watching the video

i recently encoded The Passion Of The Christ, with two subtitle tracks, original 5.1 soundtrack, and dubbed english track all bout 1.1GB

That's what I use BUT I use Xvid for the video instead. far better quality imho.

AutoGK wins the day for me.

I also recommended FairUse, but I think you have to pay for that now. :(

use xvid 1.* for encoding and ogm as a pacage container, that way, you can have several audio streams, dvd chapter info and seperate subtitle streams.

also, make big rips, i.e greater tahn 700M , who uses cds these days anyhow. Id recommend a gig a film is ok, or a gig per hour if you want serious quality.
You could also use ac3 audio if you want to keep the funky surround sound features, otherwise go for ogg.
