Microsoft to Release New Search Engine

(Article Central) According to reports, a beta version of Microsoft's new search engine will be launched Thursday on the MSN Web site.

Details about the new search engine are vague and Microsoft has declined to comment.

MSN.com's search is currently powered by Yahoo!.

Microsoft is also reportedly working on a new desktop search engine that is slated for release later this year. Google released its own desktop search engine, which works with Windows XP and Windows 2000 Server Pack 3, last month. Some reports say Microsoft could release the desktop search engine tomorrow as well.

Analysts agree that Microsoft's recent efforts are a direct response to the growth of search giant Google, which continues to dominate the space. Most analysts are also skeptical that Microsoft will able to break Google's stranglehold on search.

I've consistantly found better results on altavista and google since the mid 90's ( +technet / domain:microsoft.com / site:microsoft.com ) than from microsofts own search engine on the microsoft site...

For one their "image search" has been put at something like 7months old. If you do an image search on something very recent, as any /. readers would notice with the Abu Garub [sp?] 'censorship' thing earlier in the week, you will get very few results.

Other engines such as Altavista hve their Images a lot more up to date.

Funnily enough, it looks extremely similar to Google. That was probably on purpose however as they probably want people to be as familiar with their interface as possible. No better way than to copy the most popular search engine on the web!
