Can anyone advise me of an application (preferably freeware) that will help me with my problem.
I have just got a new hard drive for my laptop in the office and I want to make a copy (Clone) of the existing hard drive and put the date on the new drive. I want the data to be copied to the LAN. I need then to have the application to restore the information copied (cloned) from the LAN onto the new hard drive.

I'm sure this is possible its just the data is about 10gigs and so burning an image to a CD is not an option and I don't have access to ftp sites etc. The LAN seems to be the best option.

All help and advice wouldf be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Cionn

Nortons Ghost will do the trick, you can create a boot disc for your laptop NIC card that will allow you to clone your laptop HD, connect to a server and drop your Image on to same.Details here

Thanks for the responses, I will take a look at them. One thing that I note is that there is a charge for the software, can anyone tell me if there is a freware version of the software. It's just I'm a cheapskate.

This SystemRescueCD is a linux-based free utility CD that I used for exactly the same purpose. Read the documentation before you do anything.

You'll need two copies, one for the laptop and one for the machine you'll be backing up to. The tool you will use is called partimage, which will create an image of the partition(s) you'll be cloning. You'll also need to make a separate image of the laptop's MBR, using the dd command.

To restore the image onto the new hard drive, you will need to create a partition of exactly the same size as the one on the old drive - after restoration, you can resize it if necessary.
