for an idea of cost check out buy and sell - or you could stick an ad on www.irishanimals.ie in homes offered & see if any boxers are looking for a home.

You're looking at at least €400 or €450, probably more for a IKC registered pup, one that's not registered should be cheaper. Last time I was browsing I noticed there were alot of boxer pups available, the Buy and Sell should have a good few in it, the breed is becoming very popular these days.

I'd strongly recommend NOT EVER using the Buy and Sell if you are looking for a purebred dog. Number one reason is a lot of brokers for puppy farm dogs sell thru B&S esp. if all that is listed is a mobile number and they want to meet you somewhere like a car park to show you the dog(s) (which are often very poor breed examples with serious health and socialisation issues; often the IKC papers are forgeries) . Number two is that the puppies often are from backyard breeders (eg people who are breeding indicriminately, which also propagates very serious health issues within a breed as people are not studying pedigrees then breeding to make sure there is the least likelihood of problems).

If you don't think either of these are serious issues, then consider the serious problems with dalmations, cockers, cairn terriers, Cavalier spaniels and other breeds that are so popular that the puppy farms and backyard breeders start breeding. Also keep in mind that you may pay a broker several hundred euro for a mostly worthless dog from a puppy farm which the broker paid 50-100 euro for and you are getting totally ripped off.

If you really want a specific breed then go through the IKC breed clubs and ask breed secretaries for recommendations on good breeders; also going to a few dog shows to talk to breeders is a good idea.

You shouldn't be paying less that 400 for a p/b boxer, otherwise the quality of the dog is doubtful and you are as well off going for a mixed breed or (if cost is an issue) consider a rescue -- boxers and boxer crosses come up regularly through rescue at irishanimals.com's Homes Needed pages.

If you pay less remember you may well make up far more than the difference on vet bills given the breed health issues that surface in badly bred dogs. Also serious socilaisation issues mean many of these dogs get dumped in the pound eventually for housetraining problems or aggressiveness or severe shyness etc.

BTW IKC or any registration only means as much as the ethics and expertise of the given breeder. Puppy farms have little trouble getting IKC papers if they have IKC parents and many of these are obtained under false pretences from good breeders who think the dogs are going to a good pet home.

How much would you sell YOUR children for?

    Excellent post Karlin.
Yes, unfortunately you also have to be VERY wary about someone listing several breeds in the same ad. I read one the other week that had several litters for sale, all of different breeds, as well as adults. If you want a well-socialised pup, you need one that's been brought up in a homely environment and is well used to people. I doubt anyone could fit the number of dogs in that ad into their house!

"Ike is deaf, he was born deaf. He is about 2 years old and he is lovely, walks well on the lead. Who is interested in teaching Ike sign language, it will take some time, but just think how rewarding that would be. "
