New York in January

    Hey folks,

Myself agús herself are thinking about heading over to NY around the start of January and just wondering if anybody has any advice about this?

At the moment Air Lingus are looking the cheapest with both flights costing €700. Anyone know of any cheaper or not reccomend AL?

Also where would be a good place to stay over there? Hoping to keep the cost fairly low so no place too over the top!

What sort of weather should be expected around that time of year as well? i know it will be cold but how cold are we talking?

Also when there where would be the best places to go? I'm guessing January will be a good time for the sales there also?

    Cheers

    Farlz

Search for previous threads - loads of advice available there.

As for weather, I went last January and at one stage it was -15c. Prepare to be very cold

yes a friend of mine went last year and needed thermals.. also all the harboutrsightseeing cruises were closed due to the harbour being frozen.

    Tis is amazing city though

but dont be afraid...last winter was an extremely cold winter, even for NY standards!
im heading over there myself for new yrs. luckily i have some1 to stay with so it wont cost much more than the pricey 600e flight i had to pay for.
but i would highly recomend it anyway. even tho some places like that harbor thing will be closed, the shows on broadway are very good (i highly recommend RENT) and there is always plenty to do.
oh, and did i mention the bars stay open till 4am?!
places like times square are great for shopping with shops like macy's etc providing great options with decent prices.
    hope this helps

It'll be fairly cold in January. I was there in March & it was -10. This may sound like a very tacky touristy thing to do, but I'd recommend a trip up the Empire State building at the start of your holiday. The audio tour, I think, is great & it gives you a proper feel for the city & where everything is. It'll be really really cold up there though, but on a cold crisp day, the view is worth it.

Head for a few of the bigger malls in New Jersey if you can. The tax rates are cheaper there. & check with American Airlines for flight prices. They fly in association with Aer Lingus, so you end up on the Aer Lingus flight but with an American Airlines ticket. Sometimes they quote cheaper prices than AL.

I'm in NYC at the moment, its an amazing place. The weather at the mo is quite mild in the 40 degrees farinheit (I think) but when it gets cold it gets cold because of the wind chill. It snowed on the 26th Dec but it was gone two days later.

We are staying in a lovely little guest house. Its 102 Brownstone. We found it in the tripadvisor website. http://www.tripadvisor.com

Hmmm, if you search, you'll find Bazh's thread here and loads of others.
The New york things, well theres loads again all mentioned here.
iirc the naval museum with decommissioned boatd and a submarine, I went there-well worth a few hours-details on other threads.

Also hire a car with GPS they're not that expensive and even if it's just one day it's well worth it.
For example the hertz "never lost" system will by voice and moving map give you exact directions to everywhere you want to go.
It has a one click local features and attractions setting.
Best do that on a sunday if you want to stay around town and want the place less busy.
Definitely go up to woodbury common,an hours drive north of manhattan-levis, for less than $20 which at current exchange rates would be 13 or 14 euro.
And go to the sony centre there :D

Thats all for now-search for the rest :)

I think that was my gf who posted earlier in this thread, anyway we're nearing the end of 2 weeks here in New York, we've done a lot but it feels like little.

There are some excellent tours here - http://key2newyorkcity.com/

we just came off the 3 hour island cruise and it was great, for an idea of the size and history of manhatten.

    Imax 3d cinema - http://www.enjoytheshow.com/****/showtimedetails.cfm?new_theaterid=AABQI&showall=yes&CFID=14798715&CFTOKEN=88597719

We seen Polar express which was class in 3d, go for whatever 3d film is showing and you'll be amazed (100ft screen +3d)

Subway is the easiest way to get around, grab a 7 day ticket for around 21 dollars.

Go see a knicks game if possible down at Madison Square Garden www.nba.com/knicks - tickets start at 40 bucks but are worth it.

    Hope you have fun

Just re-read someones post there about the navel ship etc. its the inteprid and is located on pier 83 on 42nd street, right beside where that cruise i was talking about, very impressive.

January is usually pretty damn cold in NYC... however, so far this year it's been quite on the mild side... it was 58 degrees 2 days ago... this darn global warming thing I guess it's starting to take effect...

if ur only goin to be there for a short while i reccommend trying to get a room in the murray hill inn, its a budget hotel but the rooms are grand only problem is no lift, but it aint all bad its in a central enough location around the corner from the empire state building.i am just back at first glance my girlfriend hated it but now she is glad as it was only 190 each for 4 nights
    check here www.murrayhillinn.com

also if you are heading shopping dont make the mistake i did of heading to jersey gardens it really is a waste of money instead head up to port authority and get the 111 bus to jersey gardens it is a great outlet mall with great shops including nike, quicksilver, ralph lauren, tommy and many more u can check it out here

How long roughly does it take between landing n getting outside the airport???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭RyanfromNJ

shouldn't take ya that long... depending upon the time of day to get through Customs... just get done, then catch a train or cab into Manhattan....

some really good restaurants right at Times Square... one of my favorites is called Hoolihan's... it's on a second floor, and make sure you get a table near a window, there's a pretty good view... I usually always go there because it's right near where I get off the subway when I'm coming in from Jersey.... as for other restaurants and stuff, the sky's the limit... head to Chinatown definitely for at least one day... or to little Italy.... stay away from Spanish Harlem, Harlem, Bronx... anywhere up on the north of the island... I don't know much about strip bars... but a good night club is called Poly-esthers... it's a retro 80's club.... good time, and not too pricey... but learn the subways.... best and cheapest way to travel around the city... feel free to pm, or email me back w/any other questions....

Tis cheaper... Planning to get a Canon 300d, tis $100 cheaper in 42photo than anywhere else, although i'd much prefare the black model but i can't justify the higher price.

http://www.jr.com/ is good... Will be visiting all of them when i get there... and
