HDD troubles

Basically one of my HDD's just packed in......
    I think.
I can partition it, delete and change partions no problem but the drive just won't format, it never gets past 30% be it on a single partition or on any of the partitions when I use multiple partitions.
It's a 120gb maxtor with 8mb cache and 7200rpm, I've tried formatting it on 2 different machines. It was working fine til I ripped 2 dvd's onto the drive as iso's simultaniously, both iso's had crc errors, but the drive seemed fine.
The next time I started my machine the drive letter was still there but nothin happened when I double clicked on it! :-(
Is my drive fixable or will I be taking it to meet Mr. Sledgehammer and my frustration?!

    Thanks in advice.

If you don't mind wiping it then use the tool (bootable floppy) from Maxtor.com to "low level format" (bit of a misnomer) or "write zeros to drive".

Chances are it's just the MBR f'ed up and causing all sorts of problems (incl deleting partitions and reformatting all of which use the existing MBR to an extent).

    This is a strange one.
How have you tried to format it?

    thanxs guys.
Formatting it using the manage option on My Computer then disk management.

It'll partition fine, and on start up windows will find the partitions,
ie there will just be 1 drive letter if I make just 1 partition on the drive or 3 drive letters if I split the partition in 3.
Disk management gets the sizes right that I allocate during the partitioning process, but it just won't format it! it reaches a certain percentage and freezes.

I've already lost all data on it when i re-partitioned the thing so i'll try the maxtor tool later.
    Cheers
