I came across an old sky dish cable and box and want to try it out just to get the free to air channels. I tried pointing the dish in the same direction as the other dishes in my area but am not getting a signal lock or signal strenth. Is it impossible to do this without a signal meter? Or am I missing a step?

    This might help,

Bolt the dish onto the wall,
Move the dish really really slowly stopping for about 30 seconds after moving each degree, and eventually you'll find the right signal, Helps to have a second person there watching the singal meter etc,

Hope this is of help to you
