satellite/wireless broadband for rural home

Hypothetic soon to be real proposition.

Moving to a location in West of Ireland with a view to securing
land + planning permission at a distance of more than 5km from
    the local DSL equipped exchange.

What are the current options broadly speaking and rough tariffs
for a half decent broadband service with 256kbps download
similar to the basic Eircom DSL package but over satellite.
I've seen digiweb hype but what are the snags ?
I am not obsessed about the sort of latencies required for
online gaming - I am more interested in a decent browsing
experience, streamed radio/audio now and again, eg. listening
to a BBC radio show. Uploading family photos (couple of
    megs per week) onto pbase.com,etc.

How does satellite broadband as it is provided in Ireland today
stand up to those sort of broad home user requirements?
I acknowledge that the monthly tariff for satellite would be
probably more than fixed line. Also what is the download cap
imposed by digiweb (or other satellite providers) in their
    basic package ?
Also compared to Eircom and Esat - is company viabilty
a concern with the satellite providers ?

I am assuming that terrestrial wireless might not be an option
in the location I am considering because it wouldn't be
    densely populated.

Numerous threads here ref. satellite broadband - do a search. None of them are positive about it.

Wireless would be the way to go. Whats your location?

Sat BB is fine provided that you dont expect low pings.....there are lots of happy Sat customers in Ireland. The only real drawback is the installation cost.

The only service I have used is the Digiweb one (which is real 2-way as opposed to crappy telco return) and apart from the latency issue that goes with all Sat services, I found it very good....prices here http://broadband.digiweb.ie/

They just won a "fast 50" award too - nice to see new Irish Companies doing well and creating jobs...(sorry, off topic thought!!)

    Hi There,
It depends on where your moving to. There is a company doing 512k up and down wirelessly, I tried to get the service but they could not get a signal at mine. Try www.lastmile.ie. Good luck in the new home!!

Glad to hear they are making money. Pity that their website is useless and that they try and sell you everything but what you want (i.e. asked for).
