    Is it possible to lock windows file extensions into certain programs. I thought I'd everything fine but my mp3s have just been taken over my iTunes...I don't wanna uninstall it but Winamp is my daily player.

    Thanks in advance.

    In explorer
    Tools->Folder Options->File Types
    Scroll down to .mp3 hit change
    Change "opens with"

    Thanks anyway but I want a way of locking these settings. AFAIK if I do the windows>tools method it'll just got overwritten by a nasty aggressive program.

    Easier way is to right click a file, then select "Open with" and select your program and "Always open with this file".

    If a program is misbehaving you should remove it or check the options to see if it is not set to change the file settings on load (generally it is done during install only).

    Have you tried Set Program Acess and Defaults.
    Its in xp sp1 on.
    Not sure if it'll lock them but its worth a go.

    Start->Set Program Acess and Defaults

    RKM.

    No, there's no real way of doing it globally as most programs have the capacity to reset the associations. You could export the registry key with the correct association and run it whenever it gets reassigned to i-tunes if for some reason there's no option to stop i-tunes reclaiming mp3s. Bit of a pain though.

    Right thanks for the info. I might just delete iTunes - the fact we can't access the music store still is a joke!
