Are there any other accounts on the machine besides yours?
Administrator or guest to allow you create other accounts or try to override your old password.

Do you need anything on the disk, or do you just want to use the machione. You could reinstall wondows if you don't need what's on the disk.
You can log into DOS yeah?

I agree, the easiest way out of this is to reinstall.
Keep the file structure and install a new copy of windows.
Thats if theres no important programs you can't reinstall.

I need some of the stuff on the disk.....

It happens right at the very begining....

It says that this computer is protected by a password authentication system. You cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password.

Please type in the primary or administrator password and press enter..

maybe it's a trick question! Did you try typing "the primary or administrator password"

    :)

Lads ths is windows 98 we are talking about here.

jimmyireland you are right the latitude can be protected by a password,, If you are the legit owner ring Dell with the number that is displayed on the whiite screen and they will help you.

    Cheers

alternitivly you could open it you and pull out the cmos battery to reset the passwords. I'm not sure about your laptop but the newer ones have hard drive passwords as well to prevent this.

But i think it would be safe to ring dell.

Unless you feel a bit adventurous of course.

NO JTF its nothing to do with windows its protection on the laptop to stop unauthorised users using it. Without the password it doesn't boot. There are ways around it but the best way is for the legitimate owner to contact Dell.

you press F8 OR F9 but tbh with you if you cant get past the boot-up you wont get near the safe-mode

I want to be able to wipe the machine of everything and load win 2000

Press Del or F8 when the PC is booting to get into the bios.
    Choose boot from cd.
Insert the windows 2000 disk and restart to install from cd.

If you can get into windows just stick disc in drive and follow instructions.

    RKM.
