read the business by ian banks the other day.
    wasnt impressed in the slightest.
heard so much about him as an author but that was just muck.
is this a once off or a bad read? does he have better?

Try reading some of his stuff written as Iain M Banks as opposed to Iain Banks; his science fiction is a lot better than his "normal" fiction, imo.

Wasp factory was ****ed up... good, but very weird.

Definitely I prefer his Sci-fi to his normal fiction, consider Phlebas, State of the Art, Excession and in particular Player of Games.

The Bridge is another non-sci-fi one, as well as song of stone.

Haven't read the factory so I don't know if it's just a bad read, or you just don't like his style of writing...

Player of Games does nasty things to your head, especially towards the end. Banks has some, uhh, interesting imagery going on there.
