Power supply problem ?

    Hi all...
For the last six months or so my PC's PSU has been making an awful racket at start up, a noise which disappears fairly quickly once it warms up.
I have foolishly ignored it up to now as it has not caused me any problems. Two days ago, Windows XP froze during bootup - it got as far as drawing the wallpaper
(with a useless working mouse pointer!). I rebooted and before the XP splash screen appeared, got a message telling me c:\windows\system32\config\system is either missing or corrupt. I googled this (on my backup PC), found a list of remedies, sorted my PC out and all was well. This morning the same thing happened again.
My system specs are: Cheapy generic 300W PSU (about 3 years old), Athlon XP-M (mobile) 2400 @ 3200 in MSI K7N2 Delta mobo, 9800 pro, 1 HDD, 1 DVD writer
What I want to know is has anyone else had this problem and what was the solution ? Is the PSU the most obvious suspect ? I can post readings from Motherboard monitor if that's any use...thanks in advance for any help...

Are you sure its the PSU that is making the noise. I think you would need to open your computer up to make sure where it is coming from. My computer was making lots of noise i thought it was my big fan on my CPU but it turned out to be the little fan on my motherboard. Hard to belive that it can make so much noise.

Pretty sure - I used to think it was the small fan on my old raddy 9700, when I moved that to another machine the noise remained. I found a nifty tool to backup the registry in XP called ERUNT, so if (when) it happens again it's a 1 minute repair as opposed to a few hours :)
