Credit Card Security Online

I'm looking for some info about consumer protection when using a credit card over the internet. Lets say you make a payment on a website (appears reputable). Your details are intercepted by a fraudster or whatever, and a bill is run up on your card - not authorised by you. Where does the consumer stand? Am I right in saying that there is a specific law that protects the consumer from such unauthorised purchases on your card, when using it over the internet?

    All input appreciated.
