I have a TV-Tuner (ATI AIW) card in my machine. I use one of these for video (S-Video) and just the regular TV Coax for the sound. I'm lucky that I can mix different sound and video sources. Once captured to hdd I convrt to MPEG2 for dvd later.

What hardware, if any, do you have for capture?

not sure but i think i have that lead on your link. i previously had a ati all in wonder 128 and now i have a ati radeon 9800pro! will i be able to it with this

The all in wonder 128 is your man.....the 9800 will only output video to tv/projector/etc. Even by simply looking at the connections you can tell this.

    9800

    AIW

You want to be able to input video to your box to record it. Do you still have the AIW128?

The quick answer is you can't :( You can't capture nowt with the 9800Pro.

It is the 9800pro you have and not the 9800 AIW? Notice the extra connections on that one.

ah balls! a really expensive graphis card and you cant even do something simple with! the ati 128 is a far less expensive card and you can do that with it!!! thats absolulty madining! :o

edit: acutally i think i have that extra connection! im not sure though! im 110% sure i have the 9800 pro!

Sure if you capturing from video (which is analog to begin with) a cheap TV tuner will do. Not like your recording digital telly. To backup your Emerdale episodes there is the USB option....something like this. I'm sure something similar for cheaper could be found elsewhere. Mind you you'd have to have USB2.0 to use that properly.

ya that could be the answer for me! a cheap tv tuner card will do! do you know of any really cheep tv tuner cards?something under €20 would be good enough as only want to back up two or three videos!

€20 second hand maybe. More like €40-50 quid new (unless someone knows different?). Hauppauge WinTV for example. Check the likes of Komplett or Elara. Pinnacle, ATI, Hauppauge are the ones your looking out for. Sure even the buyand sell for an el cheapo one. The new cards will come with capture software but freeware alternatives can be found online anyway. Happy hunting.

Nope. The 9800Pro will output video but there's no way to input it from another source. For example, you could play a DVD/DivX/WMV/etc. on you computer and output it to the telly with the 9800 BUT you can't play from a dvdplayer (or video in your case) and input to your computer. End of story really.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but is it possible to Capture Sky and tranfer ii to a Pc ? i have posted this on the Satellite Forum but it seems to be dead this evening, maybe it will help me tommorow, It would be handy to get the great music thats on sky so i could record it for my own use, I often hear songs on Sky and seeming i dont have Sky+ or any recording thing other than a VCR i would love to hear them over again i heard a song today on VH1 i hadn't heard in 8yrs.

    Thanks for any info

    Regards netwhizkid

an expensive card thats not designed to do what you want it to do. its like expecting your 9800 to give you sound. its not what its for. a graphics card outputs video. a tuner card inputs video. full stop

Is this any good ? http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=304730&cks=PRL

I have a video recorder/camcorder that i want to play and just hook it up to my computer and record what i have taken during the day. What i picked out looks good and i use wireless which i could c my self using as i have a few computers around the house on wireless.

So is it any good or can i get better for the price ?
What would you go for ?
    Thanks

Sorry for hijacking tread but its in the same lines as what im looking into and did not want to start another tread about same topic.

For all those looking to capture video to DVD the easiest way, by far, is to use a standalone DVD recorder (the one's used to record from TV). I had a load of camcorder tapes I wanted to capture and burn to DVD. It's broke my heart trying to capture with my AIW card to PC... dropped frames... which software to use... what frame resolution etc etc. Never again. I bought a Pioneer DVD recorder (which actually takes a DV input for camcorder). Now all I have to do is play the video/camcorder and record straight to DVD. If I want to edit/add menu's etc I rip the recorded DVD to my pc (with TPMGEnc - rip to mpeg), edit & Author and then I have the old video converted to DVD.
