Lidl are selling this camera from next thursday.

My uncle is thinking of buying this and has asked my advice. I don't really know much about cameras. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is a bargain/worth it or not to bother?

Any advice would be very much appreciated? :D

Going on specs alone it seems to be a very nice camera. If all he wants is something for family and holidays then this camera would suit him nicely and do a lot more.

I have to wonder if he'd be better off spending the 300euro on a 3mp Canon or Nikon???

The LIDL cameras are rebadged Toshibas AFAIK. Toshiba may be a big brand in electronics but is not renowned as a camera manufacturer. And Toshiba cameras have received pretty poor reviews on sites such as dpreview.

No probs. I'm not 100% certain that LIDL cameras are Toshibas. I picked up this info from some German newsgroups on google groups and my German isn't the best :) However if you compare the 5 mp cameras that LIDL were selling a while back with the 5 mp Toshiba PDR-5300 you'll see that in appearance they are virtually identical.

    Check them out @ http://www.nytech.de

I got the 4 megapixel one, it's not bad at all.
Came with rechargable batteries and seperate charger, which was nice.
    The quality is quite acceptable.
But I wouldn't judge a camera by megapixels alone, there's far more factors that go into giving you a good quality digital photo.
Comparing photos from my nytech to my brothers (well known brand) old 2 mega pixel camera gave some surprising results... his photos seemed to have better depth and an all-over better exposure... and although mine was 4mp, when you zoomed in... things got a tad grainy... wouldn't surprise me if they were just emulating 4megapixels tbh.

To be honest, with a price tag of €299, I reckon you're better off checking out some of the bargains on amazon.co.uk at the moment (for example the Olympus mju 400 is £149.99, the Olympus C-310Z is £99.99, Nikon Coolpix 3200 is £124.99), all cheaper (all 3 or 4MP but the lens standard is just as important, if not more) and with reality glasses on, all better.

Lidl do stock some real bargains but I don't think this is one of them. As SantaHoe said, it'll be fine but you're better off with one of the above - if you don't want something tiny, you can do better on the net for €300.

Heck, for an extra €43 you could have a just-released Ixus 40. And they're overpriced.
