What Army to Collect

Well guys. Had over a 2000 point Ultramarine army before but gave that away cuz they took up too much space at the time.

Now circumstances have changed and Im going to collect again. So I am asking you which army should I collect and perhaps your reason why.

I might collect 2 different armies. Had an elder skimmer before kinda liked it so might be an option but they are quite a weak army.

Also if you know where I could buy them around the Newbridge area would be appreciated. I have been advised to mail order them which sounds good aswell(cheers Pugsley)

Eldar are quite nifty when used right. They're a bit flimsy, but they have some horrendously nasty stuff, like the Wraithlords and Fire Prism tanks. It's tough to use them properly, though, every squad is really specialised. One thing I must stress is how freaking cool Eldar models look. They're very sleek and sophisticated.

Imperial guard are interesting, if only for the amount of tanks. Not really a dynamic army, you mostly stand still and hope you can shoot enough enemies before they get into close combat, Ogryns excepted... Deathworld Guard armies are a bit more geared for assaults, but in my experiences, nobody wants to play them in the circumstances that give them their advantages, and otherwise you essentially get fewer models for your points. Of course, I haven't read much of the latest Codex, so there are probably important changes I'm missing.

I collected Orks for quite a while, because they're just fun. They can't hit anything they shoot at, but they have quite a bit of staying power and are quite good in close combat. The only problem is the ridiculous amount of Marine armie out there which negate most of their strengths. Bloody power armour.

'Nids are very interesting, too. They look good, they have a lot of options, and many other players are terrified of them. :)

I'm very undecided on Necrons as yet. They look gorgeous, but they're very limited in troop choices. Quite tough to beat, certainly.

Chaos have a good variety of specilised troops, so their always fun to pick an army with, as most of their troops are specilised in some way, particularly when you start brining in the deamons.

Eldar are very hard to use, but very fun to paint, and ultimately look cool as f**k, and weapons like the fire prism and wraith lords are unreal, as is the superbly cheap yet devestating avatar.

The bugs are another specilised army, the entire army is good at CC, but yet some of their ranged weaponsare unreal, give a carnifex a barbed stranger and tadaa, instant battle cannon, unbelievably devestating.

Cant say I have any experiance with necrons or imperial guard though, but the Imperial Guard, look the part, pity their troops are fodder, and their utterly pants in CC, but their tanks are unbelievable.

I would like to add to the commentary about the Eldar, and from what I've seen the 'nids seem to be quite entertaining to play.

As for the Necrons, they're over-rated and very easy to beat (once you know how). I've seen many a necron army having its ass *handed* back to it on a silver platter without so much as a sweat been broken by the opposing army.....

cheers for your feedback all. Eldars seem a nice choice at the moment and checked out some of their models(Its been a while since I looked at 40k models) and they look super. But Orks are just so much fun. So they lack in every department but thats why you get so many of them :-)

hmmm time to research some more. but guess eldar is a good choice

Well looking for a half decent army to play with(thats if I remember the rules) but also be doing some painting customisation.
Had some cool looking Ultramarines. My scouts were awesome.

Must look at a couple of models online and check out paint jobs done to them.

At the moment im thinking of Eldar army and collect Orks just to mess about with.

Has anyone had a look at the latest Marine models? I'm impressed. Some of them have gone kinda Roman Gladiatorial in style (apart from being encased in 2 inches of armour) and the plastic force commander is gorgeous, and very customisable. The power claws are interesting. The Terminators and Veterans are very cool. And hooray for scouts with missile launchers!

Got any pics Sarky? sound interesting indeed, scouts with rockits, about time, rear armour may finally be an actual real weakness.

That has quite a bit about the new codex, along with a couple of models.

I'm afraid pictures are hard to find right now. The GW hompage has a sneak preview link with a few marines on it.

It's about halfway down. The first pic should be the new Eldar Wave Serpent.

I hav a tau, a nid, and a small chaos army and by far the best and most fun to use are the tyranids! Cant go wrong (especially when your using seeding swarm rulez :D )

I presume you're reluctant to start another Marine army Runfree?

If you're not, the new Marine codex is rocking, makes them a MUCH more dynamic and interesting force than they used to be.

Also, if you're looking to buy models, check out http://www.otherrealms.com

I'm biased, cos I work there, but we have pretty much the whole GW range across 40K, Fantasy and LOTR, and the online prices are discounted from standard RRP as well. They weren't best pleased when they saw that :D

Add this to the fact that the shipping will only be from Cork, not Nottingham, and you should be able to save a fair bit on buying stuff.

Anyone collect Dark Angels? I'm not sure what charracter to get any ideas?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

I wouldn't bother with characters except for painting them up. They're a waste of points, and they're not allowed in most tournaments. They can be fun for special rare games, but generally I don't like them.

Unless you meant non-special characters, in which case a Terminator captain is effective and looks freaking cool.

Dunno I kinda like soem of the specials for a laugh, never played a tourny (there being none within 80 miles of me, and me not being able to drive), but I have had some fun with Abaddon before, and Kharn can also be a good laugh in the right position, however from my experience, Fabius Bile is s load of poo :)

I'm told that the new Carnifexes are going to be absolutely awesome. Old One Eye regeneration as standard...

Its just that landspeeders cost a lot. :(
