It's the hardware address of your network card.
    Takes the format xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

go to start, run type cmd and hit return.
    In the command prompt type
    ipconfig /all
and you'll see your IP address and MAC address of your different network cards.

would that be ethernet ID? cos I have something in the format you describe. Thing is the comp services are telling me it has to begin with a digit between a and f. Does that refer to PCs only?

    Yes, it's your ethernet ID.
It doesn't always begin with a and f. it's random.

It can have a number of anything between 0 and 9 or between a and f. The first 3 sets of digits can be used to identify who made the card, like the mac address from the first picture (00:0a:95) can be put in to a search like the one here and well.... it's fairly obvious its from an apple :)

If they insist that it has to start with something bewteen an a and f ask them why, chances are they'll give you a bull**** answer.

Assuming OS X, there are two ways to do this: a Mac-ish way,
    and a Unix-ish way.

    Unix-ish:
Open a Terminal session (Finder -> Applications -> Utilities ->
Terminal) and give the command 'ifconfig'. Look for an indented
line beginning 'ether'. If you have more than one interface
(Airport, built-in) there will be more than one such line.

    Mac-ish:
Apple menu -> About this Mac -> More Info... -> Network
In the upper window, select the interface you want.
The lower window displays the information.
    Look for 'Ethernet Address'

    Voilá!
