I have recently started to receive the following error message from System Adminsitrator when trying to send messages using eircom and gofree.indigo email addresses:
553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)

If I'm sending to another eircom or indigo address this doesn't happen. Is it a settings thing or something more sinister

A lot of spam email is sent using what is known as an 'open-relay' mail server. In its simplest form this is email where neither the sender nor the receiver have an account on that email server [or variations on this theme].
The reason who can send email to eircom/indigo accounts is because the server handles those types of emails [it is responsible for those emails].

If you are trying to use the email server to send to non eircom/indigo accounts e.g. hotmail.com, it needs to know that it can 'trust' you. Usually this means that you are coming from an 'approved' IP address [for example, you are dialled up on their ISP perhaps].

If you're coming from a 'non-approved' IP address, then it will only deliver emails to accounts it is directly responsible for - so it will allow you to send messages to eircom/indigo etc.
