VRT exemptions???

Not wanting to kickstart the VRT thread again or anything, but have
been hearing opinions from friends about the importation of cars
from the UK, and I need more information about it. I'm only looking
at importing one for myself, I'm not going to be running a business
    out of this....

So, I've read the sticky's, and the revenue website

    http://www.revenue.ie/services/bus_cust5.htm

and in the last VRT thread

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=196778

    the following was said

"Exemptions from paying Vehicle Registration Tax
-Visitors to Ireland who have owned their vehicles abroad for more than 6 months and who will be resident here temporarily
-People who have owned their vehicles abroad for more than 6 months and who are moving permanently to Ireland
-People posted to Ireland as part of the diplomatic corps"

Now I've heard that all you need is an address in the UK, and a
bank account over there and for there to be some movement of
cash into and out of this account. Anyone know how exactly it
works in reality though as the revenue website there doesnt seem
to give any details on exemptions. How strict are the customs
and revenue on this, and what sort of evidence would I have
to give to prove I was in the UK for a certain period of time?.

No it's not that easy. You'll probably have to come up with employment / social insurance info, car insurance, utility bills in your name, etc. If you haven't really lived there for 6 months, forget it, unless you want to setup some serious scam ;)

My wife from Belfast had to pay IR£1000 on a Pug 106 when she brought it down here even though she owned it for about a year as the revenue weren't satisfied with the pile of receipts/bills/statements/etc. that she gave them.
They are basically thieving bastards who will not listen to you!
