Anyone have any details about them? Launched yesterday? Read somewhere that their base home package is going to be €29.99 a month? Their website, which I assume is http://www.electroplus.ie is not responding. I found a number for them and rang and who ever answered me couldn't tell me a whole lot. From what I gathered, they have launched a service but dont have anything to offer yet? I left my e-mail with her and she said she would get someone to e-mail me on some details? I have pasted in one of the new articles on them here....

    Electroplus launches new broadband service
    01/11/2004 - 14:49:19

Cable and satellite company Electroplus today announced details of e3 Broadband, its new "Broadband by Satellite" offering.

The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey, officially launched the service.

E3 Broadband plans to connect approximately 20,000 homes across Ireland to broadband by satellite in year one, and to steadily grow this figure into 2005 and beyond.

    the website is www.e3broadband.ie

    Cheer's private joker.

Looks good. The €500 installation fee is a bit of a sting in the tail nut stil compares better to digiwebs offering and costing.

Will probably be the only option for those of us living in the sticks who wont have DSL available for 20 years or so.......

It's one-way satellite, though. No caps is good/unusual for a sat provider.

I would be interested though in what their contention ratio is?

If the full 256K is yours in the base package, then it is fairly daycent like!

Read into it further guys, you also have telephone charges from your phone line to occur aswell, doesnt say what these are but it does say the user will be responsible for these.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭Chaz

    From the website:

"A telephone line is required to operate the system. Your computer must stay connected to a telephone line while you are using the Internet. All telephone charges to be paid by the customer."

Add the cost of that - not cheap anymore.

    "Speed
Speed is the most important component in Broadband. Currently e3 Broadband is delivering speeds in access of 2,000 kbps or 2 Mbps (Megabytes per second)."

Seems they offer 16Mbit circuits? What a bargain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,630 ✭✭✭gline

It would probably cost a fortune because of the phone chagers and €500 cost for equipment :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,478 ✭✭✭tribble

    Oh God...

The website looks like it's was designed by a four year old in 1996.

    They can't even spell...

"Speed is the most important component in Broadband. Currently e3 Broadband is delivering speeds in access of 2,000 kbps or 2 Mbps (Megabytes per second)."

"How to set up ‘Kazaa’ on E3 broadband"

    http://www.e3broadband.ie/technical_guide/k_kazaa_on_e3_broadband.htm

    WTF!?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 642 ✭✭✭Private Joker

It says you can get 30 tv channels with the package for free, but what channels it could be "extreme Gardening 1,2,3 & 4" and a couple of mongolian porn channels. I'd probably steer clear of it there are cheaper options out there.

    Hahahahahaha.

Yeah the 'free' channels on Astra2 are rubbish - shopping channels, etc - with a couple of exceptions: BBC1/2/3/4, euronews and possibly ITV if they go FTA.

These guys are just reselling someone elses satellite 'broadband' service anyways. If you want to go satellite, might as well go with europeonline and keep the costs down a little bit. Otherwise, cpsat operate off of Astra2.
As regards it being an uncapped service, you can be sure that they will throttle the hell out of it as you use it.

    satellite bad, mmmmkay?

    I find it kinda funny....

Eircoms 512k service is 10x faster than dialup (iirc), but this satellite systems 512k is 15x faster than dialup! Hell, even NTL's blazingly fast 750kbps service is only a mere 13x faster!

It looks very costly to run. Also your phone line would be engaged while using the broadband and you have to pay for that as well. Might as well use a modem

Would anyone here sign up for that ? I cannot see 20,000 people signing up for that!!

    HAHAHA

I cant believe they offer a guide onsite to setting up Kazaa's ports etc.

That is absolutely hilarious. Very professional.

    haha

When was the last time you got a 51k dialup connection?

The cost of that is about €25 for 180 hours per month - that makes it €54/month for unlimited downloads!

I download about 1-2G a month - maybe you should ask one of the people who constantly whine about caps.

Yip, they might want to give it ago. :D
I just think that 54euros (excluding line rental) for a 256kbps service for 6 hours a day is abit much. That is not good value. There is no chance that 20,000 people will sign up for that!

Just one minor problem - If the phone line doesnt reconnect every hour !

    Hey folks,
Some co is offering satelite BB now.
    www.e3broadband.ie

seems quite reasonable and could suit anyone out in the bog arse of nowhere. Although, I do realise that generally upload speeds are crap with SatBB.

    Cheers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 370 ✭✭Adey2002

upload speeds are generally naff because sat bb is normally just one way, eg Down. your upstream is via your telephone line and standard modem (at a per min charge).

Its a one way sat with

"Total hardware and installation fee is €499.99" and then "There is a connection fee of €40, which is included in your first bill."

So its €539 Install really is it not .

If one way is what you want try Europeonline or Silvermead or CPsat , the latter are compatible with a Sky dish. Some 2 way sat providers have dropped their prices recently .....its dearer to initially install but you do not need a phone line and anytime package costing €50 a month between them .

This company are neither competitive or original, just another 1 way VSAT rebadger.

€539 is nearly a years use of IBB's 1 meg connection

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,143 ✭✭✭spongebob

They are proposing to install a 60cm Astra dish. Thats a SKY minidish with 1 LNB in effect . Then they will install a USB modem and charge €539 for all this.

I make it the material costs max €200 including VAT so they will charge €340 just to install it. Feck off :) .

This should more than cover their advertising spend on todayfm

How do u get an ISP to supply u the connection,

You put up a dish and supply your own connection. Then sign up for the service on the service providers website.
but do they mind u using your own equipment?

Nope. If you decide to go for this option and need any help, there are plenty of folks on boards who have been through the process and can assist.

OK you can do this part by DIY, but you would still have to connect via an ISP right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭Lawdie

Follow on from Tribbles post, would you give money to a company who produces the worst web business site on the internet. That goes for sites that just say "under construction"!!

Yes. Silvermead or Netsystem or CPsat are all on the Astra sat IIRC

    Look familiar :) ?
