BSB and Ireland

Since we seem to have stolen every other piece of British TV over the years, was there ever any interest in receiving the old BSB in Ireland back in 1990?

I'd assume they didn't accept ROI addresses for subscriptions, but did many people actually try to receive it? The MarcoPolo birds would have had enough power to cover the country, since they needed to cover Northern Ireland too.

P.S. Sorry if this has been mentioned before, I haven't been able to search on here for days!

Yes. However there was no official dealership arrangement and most of the subs here were Grey Market subs taken out via a UK address.

It did though most people had to use the small dish rather than the squarial. Incidentally, I found a few BSB receivers around the office lately. I also found two squarials and one of the smaller dishes when doing some moving. BSB had also done a deal with the Irish Direct Broadcast Satellite allocation holder for the Irish frequencies to expand coverage.

The technology was interesting but the management were mainly idiots. Most of them came from the BBC and some came from advertising. Murdoch's people were mean and lean. (A high percentage of the people in Sky at the time were Irish and Australian.)

I didn't think much of their Conditional Access system, base as it was on the US VideoCipher II system and I had expected it to be demolished. There was no upgrade route for their decoders/receivers. In the end it was a case of who bled out first and Murdoch's mob managed to pull off a takeover (though it was presented as a merger) of BSB. Most of the BSB boxes/small dish/lnbs ended up as cheap D2-MAC conversions using a D2-MAC/Eurocrypt kit developed by Trac. Interesting times and interesting people. :)
