Wouldnt it be a useful feature to have a "SMS this user" feature on boards, via the Contact Info section on the User Profile page ? I wonder how much would it cost to set something like this up. Surely there would be a way of generating funds from it (advertising), and perhaps making it available to boards.ie subscribers only ?

I'd imagine somebody else can fill in the technical details but SMSing costs money and the boards coffers aren't exactly overflowing what with DeVore's gambling debts and ecksor's wild orgies. Could be a nice touch but I don't really want to recieve advertising by SMS. More spam is not something I want in my life.

Advertising at our users by SMS.... JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ. Are you mad? I'd rather chew my own legs off!

You could probably pay for another new Boards server with the money that would be required to implement this properly.

Aside from the financial issues, anything that could possible allow someone to easily send free, unsolicited and practically anonymous text messages would only be bad. I I want to recieve text messages form someone I give them my number. If they want to send me free text messages there are other ways to do it.

The real pain is in having your neck and spinal column surgically altered to make this physically possible. ;)

Well could it not be optional ? If you dont want to use the service dont sign up hence no spam ?

Obviously any service like this on any site should be opt-out by default. The costs of setting a service like this aren't linear. It would still cost a metric shed-load even if there were only a few users using it.

The principle issue surrounding the adding of such SMS functionality to Boards (other than any custom development/integration) is cost (and how to get pay/get paid).

Of the top of my head, there are two realistic options (neither is mutually exclusive):
    1. Sell a subscription of n SMS messages per month to subscribers, accessible via a Web interface. SMS’s could then be sent to people who allow themselves to be SMS’ed (like being PM’ed) or to any standard mobile number.
    2. Allow people to be SMS’ed using a premium rate short-code. A user sends a message from their phone to someone using their nick to identify them and this is forwarded onto that member (assuming they want to allow such messages).
And not wanting to pimp myself too obviously, but my company could sort out Boards on any of the above ;)

I never suggested "advertising by sms", I was thinking non-instrusive advertising.

    Shameless stuff really... ;)

I suppose you have a quote worked out already?

Non-intrusive is good, especially for a first date. I'd expect nosebag at the least before we went any further...

You're talking about an opt in clause? Perhaps... The commercial boards work after all, sms alerts to bargains or latest items could be an idea. Still though I wouldn't opt in*.

    * Good idea all the same

    The Corinthian.

What if you have something like "boards.ie - Advertising message up to say 25 characters - message for the balance of the 140 or so characters"?

Great idea. I'm sure DeVore and the other Admins will put their team of thirty salesmen onto getting avertising to cover every SMS straight away.

    Meanwhile back on planet Earth...
