I hope they are improving -it would be a shame for it to finish - their coverage of the the Cork flooding was about a million times better than RTE's. Showed up just what an amateur shower the RTE news team are.

Good ole sky you can always rely on them for the sensational stories.

No, SNI is not facing the axe - in fact they are expanding it! - bigger studio, more journalists, an executive producer, more technicians, satellite technicians. I read an article (think it was in the Sunday Business Post) and the head of Sky News Ireland said that it was his goal to have continuous coverage in the evening.

So no, Sky News Ireland will not be facing the axe. The reported 200 viewers it had in August was just a cod. It was at the same time as the penalty shoot-out in the England vs Portugal match and Nielson don't have any ratings below 500.

Also, they don't take ino account the digital viewers, so ratings for Sky News Ireland cannot be accurate at the moment. Also, apparently alot of people (including one of my relatives) watch Sky news Ireland in England and according to SNI they have Irish viewers in places like the middle east. Sky News Ireland is Irelands only News service witha global reach!

Also a recent poll showed that Sky News is the most trusted news service in Ireland.

So, no, Sky News Ireland is not facing the axe, in fact, they're expanding.

Does that scare anyone else is it it just me

Most professional almost certainly - Im not sure if I'd trust any news source - especially sky (sibling of Fox)

I think Sky like to seperate themselves from Fox, completely different people behind the news.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭secret_squirrel

Well they certainly cut over to FOX enough times during the day.

Not convinced that Sky isnt just a more subtle version of Fox coz the Uk has stronger broadcasting standards than the US as regards impartiality.

Must admit though its the only News channel I would regularly watch.

I watch it myself on digital, quite simply because I work 7-7 and don't fit in with the 6 o clock news format that assumes that everybody works 9-5 and is home in less than an hour.

I find it pretty ok. The coverage of the Cork floods was excellent indeed. I don't think its wonderful but its better to have it on demand than nothing at all.

Hving said that if RTE came up with an on-demand digital news service I would definitely watch that instead.

Anyone see the coverage of the budget today? Was surprised that they broke away from regular viewing during the day, but then again it is one of the biggest Irish stories that you can prepare for

They had similar irish break away slots during the euro elections count. and that was on a sunday,

Sky news ireland coverage was seen throughout the UK. unfortunately there was not a hell of alot of it. they just glossed over the irish results.

    Really?
I thought they just broadcast the Irish show on top of the regular UK slot, so people in England had the usual set up, and we were the only ones who got the difference.
I heard they were running dry on content before the budget was announced, but I didn't hear much else about it

it looks like Grainne "I've a poker shoved up my arse" Seoige is moving to RTE. That woman needs to be brought out on a good seisiun so she'll enjoy herself and God forbid might even smile!.

If its true she is a TV slut...first TV3 then Sky Ireland and now RTE....who next Grainne...?

PS:I am free if she wants me next.

Well there are rumours that she's going to RTE but at the moment they're no more than that.
Oh and dub13, I think you may have more look at a personals site than here if your looking for love.

Anybody want to enlighten me as to how I can pick this up in the UK? I have yet to find it and the Sky call centre deny all knowledge that it exists to UK viewers

Given that it runs on the same frequency as the regular sky news I'd say you'd be hard pushed, your best bet is to try somewhere like the Satellite forum under the hosted menu

Press the red digital button after 7.45pm. The seven o'clock bulletin is looped under the 'Ireland' Screen. I think after 10.45pm this becomes the 10pm edition. I am not sure when they take it off, but afaik it isn't available at all during the day.

Tried to get SNI and I still can't get it. I have Sky Digital and there is no sign of SNI when I go interactive with the 8 screens. I tried at 11pm tonight.

    No, it's not.

In fact even if you’re just talking about video news, RTE’s online streaming news would have a far greater reach.

One way of getting it live is via the "other channels" function on Sky Digiboxes....

Press the "Services" button (near the top of the remote).
Select number 4 (System Setup), and then 4 again ("Add Channels").
In the appropriate fields enter the following (you move through the fields using the up and down arrow keys).
In the Frequency field enter: 12.207,
The next three fields are toggle fields, i.e. using the left and right arrows will change the value.

    Toggle Polarisation to : V
Leave the Symbol Rate at: 27500
Leave the FEC at : 3/4

After a few seconds a list of channels should appear. The channels on this frequency should be - Sky News and Sky News Ireland (maybe a few more)

Use the Yellow button to place a tick beside Sky News Ireland and press "Select". These channels will now be stored.

You can view them by pressing the "Services" button, then 6 ("Other Channels"), use the arrow keys to move to the channel you want and press "Select".

For those who want to watch the UK version of Sky News at the time when SNI is on, the same applies, just choose the Sky News one there...

I can now get SNI via the interactive screens. Does it work at weekends?

    DMC:

I am getting a 'No Signal' message when I put those details in and press the 'Find Channels'

Is RTE TV encypted on Sky Digital?

Sky News Interactive should work all the time. At the weekend Sky News Ireland run a weekly review type show - i.e. they select reports from each of the days during the week and run them to make a bulletin which goes out at 7pm and 10pm Saturday and Sunday.

I think I have seen this 'review show' on interactive at the weekend, though it is possible that if you look at Interactive at a time when there are important other stories that they replace the 'Ireland' screen with coverage of another event.
Is RTE TV encypted on Sky Digital?

Yes. You would need an Irish card, registered to an Irish address and 'wedded' to an Irish box. As it is also part of the 'family pack' subscription, you can only view RTE while you continue to pay Sky - that inevitably means you need an Irish bank account or credit card too.

If you can arrange to pay them you could bring the 'Irish' set-up to the UK and plug it into the dish there. You would then be able to see RTE, but you can never connect the box to the phone line (which, if you are "on a first year contract" with Sky for the Irish service, is difficult to avoid doing).

Sky News is terrible. Their coverage of the Iraqi elections was laughable. They work backwards from the outcome they want which does not make for good journalism.

Do you want to add any references to your comments? I'm not saying your wrong, but giving an opinion isn't very constructive in a discussion

Ok, in terms of the Iraqi elections they were determined to cover it in a positive light. So the anchor talked of babies being born in polling stations and a "carnival atmosphere". They had a Fox news correspondent who basically parroted the same spiel.
They neglected to put the election in context, to give any negative angle on the day or to give the bigger picture.
Contrast this to CH4 news who while not scaremongering, gave the reasons the Sunnis didnt vote, what the vote meant and also gave figures for what % of the population were able to vote (not just those who chose too).
All news media are guilty of this to an extent, but Sky really push the boat out.

It should also be noted that the election coverage was part of sky new's normal coverage and not really connected to the Sky News Ireland section. (Other than in the obvious way)

I've never been one to pretend I like Sky News, and the above is just some of my reasoning, however, as Secret Squirrel pointed out, thats a general Sky News issue and not a SNI one, I'm not sure if Sky News Ireland gave much coverage to Iraq anyway, and if they did I don't think they gave it enough time to go into the news features you speak of
