Pretty simple, the title says it all. I cant install any software from cd, i just get errors either during the installation or when the first autorun screen pops up... however i can browse cds perfectly well and listen to audio cds an whatever else. This problem has ocured with McAfee VirusScan and Firewall, nVidia installation cd, sound driver installation cd, and any game i try to install. Please help?

What are the exact errors you get? Is it always the same error msg?

"Program 'X' has encountered a problem and needs to close" Its generally something like this, nothing specific. mcafee just says encountered a problem, reboot and try again.

One program is specific, OGG Jukebox, it gives the error
    "Runtime Error

    Program E:\setup.exe

    R6008
    -not enough space for arguments"

    that help?

Sounds like your OS might be corrupt, what version of Windows are you running? If you had a spare cd-rom drive lying about you could try and install that just to make sure thats its not a hardware issue.

I'd advise trying the discs in another CD-Rom/DVD-Rom drive/computer. it could be a sign your drive is on the way out.

Or its windows fecking up. My friend had a cd-burner stop working for him for weeks, but when he reinstalled windows, it magically worked perfectly again.

I'm runing Xp home, brand new, fresh installation on a blank hard drive, and i have two drives, a philips dvd-rom and a dvd-rw. the same problem occurs regardless of which drive i put the cd in. the philips drive is about 6 years old but the dvd-rw is only a month old. Ill try a diff disk drive, i have a couple lyin around under some piles of dirty laundry i think............

How many CD/DVD drives do you have? If more than 1 does it happen in all of them? If so I'd have a guess at a virus.

Try TrendMicro - Housecall, if that fails to complete loading then you have a virus and will need to take other steps. If it does complete loading let it scan everything. Let us know the outcome. Some virii will try to stop you installing virus scanners or the installation of other software will fail as the virus trys to infect the installed files.

As an experiment to check your drive is OK, get a known good cd (cover cd for example) and copy its entire contents to a folder on the hard disk if it suceeds then in all likelyhood your cdrom is fine. Anpther possibility is the hard drive itself - do a drivescan.

Did the housecall, installed and scanned with no trouble, didnt detect any viruses...
Copyin info from cds to hard drive works fine too... much confustation here...

If still problem after rulling out virus/malware then

If using NT/2K/XP restart in safe mode to bypass startup junk and retry install.
If using 95/98 copy the contents of the CD to a folder and restart in safe mode and retry install.

Arr Capt'n! i'll try that later, in the middle of a 700Mb download so i cant restart at the minute. although if it installs in safe mode well and good, but i dont really want to have to go through that procedure every time i want to install a prog ya know yourself. cheers

are there any errors in your application/system event viewer that might point you on the right track?

Maybe a jumper config problem, slowing down transfer from the CDs and causing the installation programs to interrupt.
