9800 Pro. PC not booting!

I hope someone can help me.
Just bought a 9800Pro. Uninstalled my old Nvidia drivers, shut down, remove FX5600 and placed my shiny 9800pro in. Plugged in the extra power cable and my monitor and started up.
This is where the problem starts. The pc powers up, all the fans start and lights come on, but my monitor stays on standby. The usual beep doesn't happen to show that it's booting up. I don't know if it's even getting to the BIOS 'cos I can't see anything. Now, if I try to boot up again, but unplug the molex from the 9800 I get a warning message telling me to plug the power cable in, so I presume the connection is there.
Currently back using my GF FX5600 :( and I'd be very grateful if anyone could give me some advice.
My setup is: AMD 2600+XP, 120GB WD hard drive, ASROCK K7S8X mobo, 480W Thermaltake psu, DVD ROM, Pioneer 108 DVD writer, AOC LM800 monitor

    thanks for any help.

    yea rite section

    maybe the card is faulty

    try reseating the card

its not a drivers thing, even without drivers it'll boot

Can you try the 9800 pro in another pc to see if it will even boot

So are you saying that the 9800 will bring up the BIOS/Startup screen if you unplug the molex from it but will not enter Windows, or have you no picture coming on regardless of the molex connector being in or not. If the 9800Pro produces a picture under some circumstances(molex out) then it is unlikely that the card is a goner. If you could test the card on another computer, it would help narrow down possibilities. If it failed on another system at least you would know it was the card itself and not something in your pc. If it wasn't for the fact that you have a decent power supply I'd be saying that was the problem, but you should have enough power from that one of yours.

Thanks for the advice. I don't have a spare pc, but I'll take it round my brothers tomorrow to test.
duridian: no, it won't bring up the the bios. If I unplug the molex from the card I just get a big red message telling me to plug it in.
I suppose if it works in my brothers pc I should strip mine down to basics? Forgot to mention I have 2 sticks of RAM in, but I have no problems with the geforce.
thanks again for your help, I'll post back tomorrow.

I have a similar problem but i know that my card is dead, as it done so when i was using the pc.
With the card in the pc it just turns on and thats it, in a friends pc it just gives of a beep.
I hope your card isn't dead anyway, Try this link and on page 2someone had a card die to and got it to work again using the method described. Worth a look before declaring your card dead.

Could your power supply be insufficient? I doubt it, because the 9800 and 5600 would use similar amounts of power, but its always possible. What wattage is the PSU?

You could always try putting in the 9800, and disconnecting your optical drives and see if it works then. That would rule out the PSU as being the problem.

EDIT: Didn't notice it was a thermaltake 480watt, never saw that mentioned. Ignore this post :p

The Thermaltake 480W PSU is probably more than enough as TT rate their PSUs buy continuous load as opposed to peak load like q-tek etc. It may be worth trying the 9800 as the only device on a particular power rail but tbh I reckon your problem is elsewhere.

It may be worth sticking in your old gfx card - don't worry about drivers - you just want to see if you still hava a working mobo, the fact that you are not getting beeps is worrying as most problems will at least give you beep code sequence beeps (yep the number of beeps does mean stuff!) if you remove all of your RAM, disconnect you HDs and CD/DVD drives you will still get some beeps normally.

The message about powering the 9800 comes from the 9800 card itself rather than the BIOS when the 9800 is only getting power from the AGP slot.

It is worth disconnecting all of your cables and giving your internals a light hovering, just in case you have some conductive crud hanging around, sometimes reseating parts can help.

At the moment your box is dead so you don't have a lot to lose but trying stuff out.

Thanks again for the help. I put in my old gfx and my pc works, so I presume that points the a dead/faulty 9800?? Haven't managed to try the 9800 in another pc yet. Looks like I'll have to go back to where I got the card.

Until the card has been tried in a second pc it would be impossible to say with certainty whether it's dead or not. If the card was obtained locally could you get whoever sold it to you to test it in a pc?
