Seems like there is a million places to order them from.
I don't care what region they are, whats the cheapest place to get them, that delivers to Ireland in your experience?

try www.ezydvd.com.au - Australian R4 site, dirt cheap, takes about 4-5 working days to Ireland. Aussie discs are often better than their R2 counterparts, plus almost always uncut.

You beaut. Thats a damned fine site and you say they get here in 5 days or so ? The prices are almost halfprice incl delivery. Think I'll be getting that Stanley Kubrick set.

Oh oh and The Godfather Trilogy 5 disc special is £60 to my door. £60, phoar.

Also try from R4 www.dvdcrave.com just as good as EZY and just as fast.

IN Canada www.absound.ca normally have some bargains, just check the currency exchange, normally deliver 5-8 working days.

Absound can be a bit of a pain to deal with - the status thingy isn't very accurate so if an item is out of stock you may not know until your package doesn't turn up.

And then was the little incident with the stolen credit card numbers (mine was one of them - ba$tards!)

I'm impressed with that aussie site!

    Cheers

That stuff’s loaded with nutrients. I …I can't compete with that stuff."

DVDBo are pretty good, but you make up for the free shipping with the ususally slightly higher prices they charge. If you want to buy 3 or more, its usually cheaper elsewhere.

Their service isn't great either - it takes up to about 3 weeks for stuff to arrive (although it often gets here slightly sooner)

Of course you could always compare prices at www.dvdpricesearch.net (US/CAn stores only)

Yes I had to change my Card Number because of that hacking situation on A&B Sound but you can now be sure that they will not have a problem like that again.

The 3 Orders I have placed since then have arrived within a week. 2 of these have contained boxsets. Any queries I've had with them have been answered very promptly. Yes if an item is out of stock they can be slow to dispatch but that is the only problem with them.

On the other hand dvdboxoffice have to be the worst company I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with online. They have no indication of stocks, you cannot edit your order after you place it and you have to email them to cancel it and then your not guaranteed that will work as I found out when an order I cancelled 4 months previously turned up on my doorstep. They hardly ever reply to email queries which in my books is a big no no !

Also check out Amazon as with coupons they can be fairly cheap as well and their customer service is second to none. (Coupons listed on the DVDforums linked to www.dvdtimes.co.uk )

I've bought loads of stuff off BlackStar http://www.blackstar.co.uk . They're based in Belfast. I can't really comment on price relative to other sites because I don't know but I do like their site, it's very well laid out, and I can honestly say that dealing with them has always been a pleasure.

For example, the only "snag" I've ever encountered was when one DVD that I'd pre-ordered was held up in manufacturing. They emailed me, explained the situation and gave me a nice discount. Can't say fairer than that.

Nice one hudson806, just placed an order with them. They were cheapest around, and the movie does have extra stuff that the R1 and R2 releases don't have, strange that(anyone care to speculate why?).

Don't worry - An Post are supposed to pick up tax on anything over about IEP30 or something. They don't. Ever.

OTOH, if you have them sent by courier you almost certainly will be charged.

Which store did you buy from in the end? (it wasn't too clear in your post)

I guess there are a few reasons why R2 releases are often crap:

-R1 will always be at the top of the pile - all the extras are created there in the first place (Granted, there are exceptions)

-R4 customers can afford to be picky - R1 discs are freely available over there, whereas here and particularly in the UK, FACT will organise raids on shops that carry R1, under the guise of 'copyright protection'.

-R2 suffers horribly at the hands of the Censor. Thing is, if you cut a film, its not easy to edit the commentary track around the missing time, so they just drop the commentary.

-The extras must be certified in the UK, meaning that someone using the F word will cause the overall rating for the disc to rise (Jaws, for example is rated PG, but the language on the included documentary bumped the DVD to a '12' - Universal are unusual for doing this though - Warners just drop extras left, right and centre when it suits them.)

-R2 customers are easily satisfied. We buy Pan&Scan discs. We buy non-anamorphic discs. We buy censored discs. We buy overpriced discs. Why should the studios bother to increase the quality of their output when the customers are that dumb?

    All IMHO, of course

Sometimes they do. Generally I've found that if the packahe is worth over £100 they'll come after you for the tax.

I have never been hit for import tax ever. Unlike the poor *******s in the UK once it goes over £18stg they are normally nailed.

I do expect Irish Customs eventually to cop on and nail us for imports.

The cartel that controls DVD production (www.dvd-cca.org) has carved the world up into 6 different regions in order to preserve their revenues from releasing films in different places at different times at different prices. USA/Canada is Region 1. Europe, South Africa and Japan are in Region 2. Australia and New Zealand are in Region 4. When you buy your DVD player, it has been preconfigured to play only discs from the territory it was sold in - all other discs will be rejected. This of course, leads to the bizzare situation where you can legally buy a DVD player, legally buy a DVD, but put them together and they won't work, because if they did, some movie studio might not make as much money.

Many cheap DVD players come with 'handset hacks', that allow you to switch the region of the player using the remote and 'secret' codes found on the internet. More expensive players often need to be chipped by specialist companies such as www.techtronics.com or www.upgradeheaven.co.uk.

More information about DVD region-coding and other (more serious) wrongs committed by the DVD-CCA can be found at www.opendvd.org. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is fighting a number of cases against the cartel's cronies at present as well - www.eff.org.

Sorry, didn't mean to get political... wink.gif
