I'm a really light sleeper and sometimes find it particularly diff to get to sleep. I'm living in my GDs with some cousins and they, being 1st/2nd arts students, as opposed to me doing a masters have slightly more unpredicatible ideas re: bed time. I've tried asking them to shut up, and they are 'relatively' quiet but the noises pisses me off which keeps me awake as well.

Has anyone tried the typical ear plugs to sleep? I used them in work before and they were relatively comfortable but I'm sure it can't be ideal to use them consistently over long period of time.
    anyone know?
    cheers

i had a similar problem in college. tried the old ear plugs for a while but i stopped when i had a dream (nightmare) where the ear plugs went into my ears and i couldn't get them out! I thought they were in the centre of my head...really scary! It felt so real.

Seriously though, i could never really relax with them on. What i did instead was just listen to music 'till the house quietens down and everyone else is in bed. You'll still be awake but at least you won't be getting pissed off.

I used to sleep with ear plugs in, they're ok. A friend of mine used to sleep with tissue paper stuffed into his ears...don't try that, he had to go to hospital to get them removed once. And as far as I know, he still does that. The fool.

I've friends who do the ear-plug thing. All I could suggest is buying good earplugs - not the ones you get in the SU shop!

I used to use the spongey ones available in boots to deal with a snoring roommate, worked great. The only problem with earplugs is that they fall out and get mankey so change them often.

You can get earplugs, the kind used in industry, that are attached to eachother (like mittens used to be on your jacket), if you have any fears about them getting stuck in your ear :D. Probably be uncomfortable though.

I could see myself personally getting freaked out when I can't hear anything in the morning. But I sleep really heavily, so it wouldn't be an issue.

I have used the spongey ones too. I've thrown them into the washing machine.

Aside: I always wear ear plugs at music gigs. It protects your ears from the excessive volume normally present. You can actually hear the music better (and, as I experienced in one case, hear how crappy the sound system was).
I used to come out of gigs with ringing ears. No more.

these are the ones I used when I worked in industry (cardboard box factory - I sh*t you not). They left my ears feeling a little 'clammy' though. I reckon that this for 8hrs straight nightly can't be healthy

When my older brother lived here I used to wear ear plugs all night cause of his snoring. After he left 6 years ago, I still find myself using the ear plugs every night, even though the house is very quite, I can't fall asleep without them anymore

Lived on campus in UCD in the 3rd yeear of my degree. Lived with compelte and utter muppets. Needless to say they were noisy all hours. Got little foam ear-plugs, did the trick. No problem sleeping with them in.

The wax and cotton wool ones work much better than the spongey ones.
Any sound that isn't blocked sounds further away, and so less alarming and less likely to disturb sleep.

I'm a great believer in those spongy yellow ear-plugs. I stay in b&b's alot for work so use 'em there. I find they often slip out during the night though. I've always admired people who can sleep through any noise.....

The wax ones are better for sleeping with I find, as you can mould them to your ear (and mould them outside so that they are flat so as not to catch on bedclothes).

I use ear plugs whenever I need to: at work, when I'm walking, on the train etc. Sometimes I use them when loud people are speaking with me on the phone.

You DO know you can turn down the volume on your phone?

My wife can only sleep with a fan blaring to block out all other noise... Im used to it now so try it.. replace noise with a constant noise and you might find it easier.

Mate of mine used to use them. I always thought it was a bit wierd, but thats probably because i could sleep through an earthquake. Theres no harm in trying them though. If they work for you, great. If not, throw them away and try something else.
