    here is the POTA ending as I understand it:
    After the big war, the main character has a chance to stay on the planet and become a leader figure and aid in the construction of a society where humans and apes can co-exist peacefully. Instead, he chooses to leave, and possibly because of this, the desired society does not come about.

    He returns in the future, and the twist becomes apparent when he lands. At first I had expected him to crash into the white-house and see Humans and Apes together in the government, confirming that the peaceful society actually worked out, but instead, it shows the statue of the bad ape as the hero, and there are no humans to be seen, so since the bad ape is held in high regard by the present population, we can only assume that humans are despised. Then the apes appear with guns and technology, and i'd say that means they are now what humans were in the year 2000, and the roles of humans and apes have been completely reversed.

    as seen two posts down in a thread identical to yours, http://www.boards.ie/bulletin/Forum12/HTML/000999.html

    This may explain it - btw, it doesn't make the ending make sense just sets out the sequence of events, more or less. And there is already one thread specifically about the ending and another about the film itself, so don't bother making another thread next time.

    its silly and runis the movie TBH..

    Even if its an ape future, an exact copy of Washington DC is just silly, and makes no sense..

    (Tho the baddie ape did not seem dead the last time we see him, and Dirk's original pod is still there I suppose..

    I'm afraid I must disagree with Illkillya.

    Here's my take.

    We see Leo Davidson get back in his ship and go back in time to when he left. He returns to Washington DC overrun by apes. But it is not the future, or the planet he left. It's an altered past. There's a big Thade statue instead of Abe. The inscription goes:
    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
    In this temple as in the hearts of the apes for whom he saved the planet, the memory of General Thade is enshrined forever.
    </font>

    Ah, I see the image CT posted conforms with my theory. And also confirms how Thade got back to Earth's past. The explanation lies at the bottom of the lake - Leo Davidson's delta pod wasn't as badly damaged as we may have thought.
