When I turn on my computer it starts up but as soon as the pentium 4 screen comes up it hangs. Other times it will load fully and then the monitor will go into standby mode. It's either 1 or the other, hang at the start or monitor powers down. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with it??

open case ,disconnect power cable from esb socket, make sure all cards are in tight ,all ide cables are in all the way on motherbord,in harddrives cdroms dvd, etc, make sure grafics card is inall the way.and monitor cable is tight in all the way into grafix card take out grafix card putit in again tight monitor goes to standby means its getting no signal, ,all power cables are connected to drives and fans, see if hd light is coming on ,try boot disk does it load up,use f8 key do u get menu for safe mode dos prompt, try f1 or del key can u getinto bios mode, see if u have agp or pci switched on in bios, u may needto ENABLE BIOS AGP OR PCI mode, depending what type card u have.u cud try using motherboard onboard video enable in bios if ur grafix card is dead or faulty, or try putting in old pci card connect to monitor ,reboot. have power disconncted from esb socket when doing this cos pc could be in standby mode.take ur time.what type video card have u got. if u have loose connection in pc it will crash or loose ide cable or incorrect drive jumper setting or faulty hardrive, try boot floppy drive a.

I have tried everything suggested and still no joy. When it opens in safe mode, the comp will work for 2 mins like i said before and then it's as if the screen disintegrates and then freezes. I have a 9800xt in the machine and it's a Medion computer. A technician is coming out Tuesday so what should I tell him? I reckon myself it's the gfx card after dying on me, which they are installing a new one for me anyways

Tell us the specs your running? It could help alot Especially the PSU (Brand and Wattage)

If the GFX/MEMORY/CPU etc was borked or improperly inserted, then the mobo would beep a certain amount of times.

Dempsey --- last nite when I came home from work it did a lot of beeping and I just powered it down. Then after that -- the you know what hit the fan.

If its about 8 beeps or (a load) id be looking at the memory. A was helping a friend install memory i gave him. First boot he got a load of beeps i cut the power and press down the memory modules and there was only slightly up and tilted to one side, it looked ok but it wasnt. Earth yourself, pull the power cable and then use your hands to make sure that they are seated properly

Its sounds to me as if memory is the problem, i could be wrong.

Where did you get the PC that you arent sure of the specs?

Beep warnings on a pc are to tell you that hardware/hardware configurations are ****ed. It depends on how many beeps. If its beeping in three's like --- --- --- --- then you most likely have a memory issue. If its a constant beeping noise
then your ****ed. The Mother board has had it. If it beeps in an alternating fashion like -- ---- -- ---- -- ---- then you have a CPU issue. Those are the only one's I know for definite. But if there's a beep warning good luck to you thats all I have to say. Thank god you have a technician coming out.

Yeah it beeped constantly a while ago and then I didn't do much to it then after that. I just said I'd leave it and see if anyone would know what the problem was before the technician comes out.

Hi kensutz Have you access to a different video card to try in it? Given the information you have posted trying a different video card would be my first port of call. .

if u can get a loan of a memory simm same type as memory u already have ,take out all memory chips, carefully, put memory chip in slot 0 ,FIRST SLOT. then reboot go to bios ,del, or f1 usually, enable onboard video card.power off ,take out powercable from,pc. use antistatic band or earth yourself.touch water tap.get rid of static electricity.take out video card.plug monitor cable into motherbord video out connector. reboot. sounds ,like 1,ur memory chips or faulty,or ur motherboard is dead, or video card faulty, loads of beeps usually indicate memory chips are not in all the way ,theres a bit of a trick to put ing in memory chips.lokk closely are they in all the way, engaging holder clips, holes. and fully upright, make sure u dont try put em in backwards, examine how they are seated facing, staight up, before u take em out, u shud feel em click into place u sorta put em in at an angle into slot then GENTLY PUSH EM FORWARD to get them fully seated.

try taking out present video card first use spare video card or onbord motherbord video card FIRST BEFORE U GO NEAR MEMORYCHIPS. u must FIRST KNOCKOFF PC AND TAKE OUT powercable from esb socket before u go near pc otherwise u,ll damage motherboard or memory chips.or both.u may need to go to bios to enable onboard video dispay, but if u cant get into bios its still worth trying.just plug monitor cable into video out socket when power is off and reboot.after taking out videocard.
