I think all jobs in the public sector are advertised through publicjobs.ie . Most of them are for general positions i.e. clerical officer etc.. Generally you'll have to take part in competition and then have an interview (or two). Specific jobs in IT are advertised from time to time, but generally they're for people with loads of experience and are usually taken by civil servants.

it grades are recruited from within the civil service and are not open to outside competition.

However this may be changing in the near future. (also you're probably better off ringing in then going to their website, as they may know about future competitions)

Well the Civil Service do competitions about once every 18 months for Computer Programmers and Executive Officer (Junior System Analyst). You usually have to do an aptitude test and if you pass that then an interview.

All in all it took me 9 months from applying to actually starting the job.

Where i am at the moment the majority of the IT staff are actually from private companies... I'd say it is a 3 : 1 ratio.

Dont know what is going to happen in the future though.. What with decentralisation and that a lot of IT jobs are going to be outsourced. For instance i would like to stay in an IT grade but my department is going to Kildare so i would have to go with them to keep my present grade. if i dont go i will be sent to an administrative post. Dont think there are a lot existing IT staff going so i can see a lot of private companies trying to get the posts.

As far as i know the last IT competition was held in Sept 2003 so there may well be a new one coming up. You should pop into the Civil Service commission head office in Jervis St and see if they have any information.

Are you talking about the civil service in an entirety or simply the local authorities?

At the moment I'm a Clerical Officer though the only chance of being put directly into the IT department is pretty slim (As they want you to learn about all of the departments to get a broad understanding of what's going on).
