I recently purchased a Dell laptop for a friend. He's had it for a month now + everythign is fine except - he needs ot hook up a till via RS-232 but the laptop doesn't have an RS-232 port. Looking on Dell's site I can't find any information as to whether the docking station/port replicator provides a serial port. Does anyone know if it does and/or is an alternative solution available?

You can buy a 9-pin Serial to USB converter.... Google for it...

I got a USB - PS2/DB9 Serial converter for my laptop in Compustore a while back. Dunno if they still stock them but, given that a lot of laptops don't have serial ports anymore, I'm sure that you won't have a problem finding something similar.

    Regards,

    Liam

Compustore are gone bust this week but any old run of the mill store should have them. Or 20 euros and delivery from komplett. Given that it's a low-value item you might be better off buying it in a shop as the delivery cost will be anbout another tenner.

Thanks all for the quick response. Now I can go back to looking like the computer genius to my mate again :D

I'm going to order online and take advantage of the minimum shipping cost to pick up a few extras I need for myself. Besides, I wouldn't want to go into da city boy wit all de floods and stuff.
