Cooling amd64

I've just completed my first build (go me!) and, to my great surprise, it all went swimmingly. However, I discoverd that there was a backplate left over from the cooling unit for my AMD 64 2800. It doesn't seem to need it as it all fits perfectly without it, but my bios is registering a cpu temp of 60c idling, which seems a bit excessive. The only other cooling comes from a fan on the side of my case (budget). My question is: Does anyone know if this sticky backplate have any effect on cooling?

    Thanks in advance

What type of cpu cooler are you using ?

    Sticky backplate...

Do you mean a thermal pad? Is there any thermal compound or pad between your CPU and heatsink?

If it's what I think it is and you have no thermal compond to aid heat transfer between your heatsink and CPU die then that would go a distance towards explaining the high temperature.

the backplate that comes with the amd retail cpu cooler is needed to ensure proper contact with the cpu die. was there a backplate prefitted to the motherboard ??
if you used a third party cooler and it's backplate then you should be fine. just let us know which cooler you used.

some of the a64 boards have known issues with reporting incorrect (high) temps. what motherboard are you using ?

No it's not the thermal compound between the CPU and the sink, it's a backplate that is stuck on the otherside of the motherboard to hold the assembly in place. I can't see a reason for it being there. Plus, it could actually be a bit dodgy if it came in contact with the case.

I'll revert with the name of the cooling unit - it was part of AMD 64 2800 bundle from Komplett but it doesn't look like it's the Thermatake Venus that's being packaged with the bundle now.

The mobo is a MSI K8N Neo Plat - actually I've heard there were temp reporting problems with it too, but until I get my Ripwave back from those lovely service ppl at IBB I've no Internet access to update the drivers.

backing plate is what you screw the heatsink onto so its all nice and solid...different heatsinks usually come with different backplates, for instance my zalman 7000b had 1 with it so i had to melt the defaults backplate off to put the zalman 1 on..now ive got a waterblock im using the old backplate again they are nothing to worry about like making contact with the board or anything, its not that thats giving u ridiculous temps its the motherboard i have the extact same 1, if your so bothered about it i suggest flashing your bios, ive found the 1.56 beta to be good, well its helping with overclocking, the temp still aint spot on, its claiming 35 now which i stil think may be a little high i dont know but sometimes it goes to 52 for no reason..then its 31 again

i have the same board, and it does require a backing plate to support the heatsink. that might be step 1.

bios 1.4 is the latest official release for the board, you'll get lots of info here

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone for their help. Frankly, I wouldn't know where I'd be without Boards.ie for the past few years.

It looks like it was a matter of flashing the Bios despite my budget case and stock fan.

If it hadn't been for this website I'd probably never have built my own rig.

Hope I can be of help to someone here one day.

    Thanks again.
