RTE news reporting that Yasser Arafat is reported to be very ill and there are unconfirmed reports that he might be dying.

He is said to be afraid to go to a hospital due to fears about his safety

Was just wondering since he hasnt left that compound of his is he as influential as he used to be and given that there will be no successor could this lead to infighting within the arab community in Gaza?

heres a link to the story from the bbc

There might very well be and then Sharon will find out who really has been "fomenting violence" when the more extreme elements take over.

Arafat when he finally dies and that could be any minute now, will have left "his" people infinetly worse off. The fall-out will be fairly catastohpic as there is no chosen sucessor nor anyone ready to be thrust into power. He's been a total disaster - corrupt and weak. Yet able through his private terror group able to stiffle any political growth within the Palestianan Auithority.

The idea of having a western style democratic system in occupied Palestine is ridiculous. Even though he was elected under international monitors, a strong leader with emergency laws is needed when your land has been stolen and occupied for 30 years. Until such time as the international community force the occupiers to adhere to UN 242 this is an inevitable reality. As for the "corruption"..perhaps he was..most of the allegations centre around foreign bank accounts and kitted out apartments in Rammallah....nothing new compared to most leaders even in the west...and when it comes to private terror they have a long long way to catch up on the occupiers themselves who are masters at killing innocent women and children on a daily basis. (check yesterdays news)

Most of which is fairly irrellevant, Dathi. The fact the Israeli policy/actions is wrong should'nt preclude the PA from runnning its own affairs in an honest, accountable fashion. Also call me an absolutist - but you can't be relative about corruption. Either you is or you ain't.
