Reporters without borders has announced their 3rd annual index of press freedom. Ireland has come out in first place alongside Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia and Switzerland. We are up from 17th last year.

Considering the major broadcaster is state owned, and their is a fair degree of bias in much of the print media. Does everyone else think this is a fair assessment of the media in Ireland?

I was always under the belief that the very stringient libel laws in this country made it very difficult for news gatherers release their stories.

The print media can be biased, you only have to read an eircom related story in the independent to see that. I think the BCI do a good job in keeping the broadcast media fair and balanced, Their only downfall is they do not allow more stations have licences.
