Try Windows Remote desktop if your running XP or another app like Symantec's PC Anywhere.

Is it possible to use VNC?

For sheer portability, I'd go with VNC.

There's about twelvety different variations of VNC out there, but I've always found TightVNC to be best suited to my needs. It's also nice and miserly on bandwidth if you set it up right.

TightVNC is probably the best Free remote desktop tool.

Agreed, just chose a password that can't be easily cracked, and if possible firewall the pc you will be connecting to, IE only open that port to the IP address of the pc you'll be connecting from... if that makes sense.

Currently using realVNC to control another PC downloading stuff elsewhere. Easy to set up running through opened ports in two firewalls. everything working fine :D
Tip. reconfigure for custom ports and use a decent password. (not the most secure thing in the world but the quality of data on both PC's wouldn't make anyones day if they accessed it)

    http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html

Tell your mate to install it too, and then just get him to do an
ipconfig or netstat -a to get his ip address, provided he's not behind a firewall natting his address you should see his desktop.

PS: Take the unstalbe version, it's fast as phook (and it's completely stable too!, which is nice)

    ZVNC includes a VPN
or you could use PPTP and RealVNC
