    Hey there,

    I've been playing my acoustic steel string for about a year now and am really into it, as a result I want to become more informed about various options for electric guitars, I've heard a fair bit of sales talk from the guys in shops, which is cool, but because I want to get straight up to the mid high end of guitars (no point faffing about) I'd love some advice on styles and aesthetics of combinations of guitars and amps/heads... (Mostly guitars though)

    The styles I love to play are fingerpicking classical/bossa/jazzy numbers, but when consider recording always like to rock out and would need something that will provide a good (Crystal Method-Like) heavy guitar sound.

    Perhaps this is too much of a range to ask for, I've checked out Classic Telecaster and Gibson Les Paul Studio (£700 UK) and so far sort of prefer the gibson's warmth and (god forbid) its look...

    I'm sure there are lots of great opinions out there, I'm looking forward to a good read, nice one

    The only problem with the studios is that the quality can vary greatly. Some can be vey nice, others can be muck. A tele is truly a lovely guitar though, in whatever form. So many classic tones can be got from the combination of Marshall amps and Gibson guitars. It's pretty much the benchmark in rock and roll sound.
    The following offer some fairly classic tones:
    Les Paul -> JCM800 2203
    Strat-> JTM 45
    Strat-> JMP 1
    SG or Tele-> JCM2000 DSL50/DSL100(A personal favourite of mine)
    For heavier stuff something like an SG or an Explorer-> JCM2000 TSL100 can't be easily beaten.
    Naturally, all these setups depend on any effects being run through them and on the player for their best effectiveness. For example, there's no point having all the extra gain of a JMP 1 if you're not going to let the guitar scream. Eventually though, setups are all down to personal taste. For instance, I run an Ibanez RG270DX through a Marshall G30RCD at the moment with no effects and although it does everything quite nicely, I wish I could have known more and done more work looking for my perfect setup before I settled on what I have now. At the moment I want to upgrade the guitar to maybe an SG and the amp to a DSL50. Now to rob a bank....
