It was good ... but not great ... it was enough to make you sit through it all ... the end was CRAP to say the least though ... but there was enough to just keep you from killing you self....

anybody notice how long the credits where? in all fairness ... the needed only 1 room for the entire movie ... maybe 2.

yeah i saw it last night didnt think much of it.. wasnt great..

    I liked it.
It was a very original idea.
The effects were pretty good, that guy getting sliced up at the start was pretty amazing. I wasn't expecting that.
It was great idea, though i agree that it could have been done more justice. The acting was a little wooden at times.
Needing to know who built the Cube was unimportant though. It's like needing to know what was inside that stupid box in Ronin. Everything revolved around the box, but the contents were unimportant.

Did anyone see this film last night?
It was on RTE 1 at about midnight.
I have to say i was very much surprised at how good it was.
I'll have to pay more attention to the films RTE put on late at night.
I won't ruin the plot for anyone that hasn't seen it, but it's definitely worth a look.

Dammit I meant to watch that!! I have heard good things about it. That's the problem with RTE they put on all of the good films too late! I had to stay up untill 3 or 4 am just to watch La Haine once! (It was worth it! I love that film!)

from my post on another movies board, sorry im too lazy to edit it smile.gif

    SPOILER ALERT.. IF YOU CARE

was on last night on RTE1.. sorry if someones already posted about this
    elsewhere..
anyway what a pile of absolute ****e, I had heard nothing but good things
about this, but wow I ended up laughing at the end of it its so
    ridiculous.
yes you never find out about who built the cube or its real purpose, and
as is mentioned in the film "its pointless", as is a film about a
    pointless structure.
the dialogue is among the worst i have ever seen in a film:
"we can avoid the traps using the boot".. hahhahaha man that boots good.
also, within three minutes of seeing the first cube they were placed
in I had come to the conclusion that it might be some sort of giant rubix
cube (i.e. where the cubes kept moving).. why didnt it occur to them?
predictable.. obviously the kid with the handicap was some sort of genius,
obviously the bad guy would come back at the end (rule #112 of films, if
they aint extremely dead, then they'll come back before the end).
obviously their first sign of hope "you can get us out of here
right?" with the escape artist was doomed to failure.. 2 seconds later
    he's dead.

    END SPOILER

what can i say its a ****ing great idea just not explored very well at
all, add in some crazy ass maths and people think its a great film..
    pants to that.

Oh... I don't feel so bad about missing it now! smile.gif But I still think RTE needs to stop arsing around when they show good films.

    it was a great film,

the character interaction proved fairly disappointing though because in a maximum of 3 its was like they knew each other for weeks

When the prime numbers thingy was discovered and the "i like the green room" lad entered , what came to my mind : rain man

In fairness though I really loved this film

Maybe im wrong but didnt we have a thread on this already? when it aired on Movimax? anyways

Its a bit cheesy alright , but I liked it , the ending was woeful .In fact the only thing I like was the Worth Character ,A good performance from the Actor , but in particular he had a really classy line:

Crazy Guy: Its hopeless! *Guy throws life saving boots out of cube into chasm*

    Worth: ...Well that was good

Something about that made me lol for half an hour

I thought it was a FANTASTIC film...

I have seen it at least 3 times already now, and it's STILL a great film.

But MY favorite line from the film is when Quentin goes: "You don't want to boot..."

i thought it was a brilliant film.
all the characters had their strenghts and weakness's so that they needed to help each other.
it was kind of easy to guess what happened next kinda thing like the autistic guy figuring out the "astronomical" smile.gif calculations, but apart from that i was suprised id never seen or heard of it before then.
    very enjoying flick.

    I loved it.

Complaining about the ending, ie. not getting a nice neat explanation, isa bit strange since the entire movie was never moving towards that anyway. The focus was on character interaction and escape. They tried to reason how to survive, and the WHY of it all was only 2ndary.

As for silly dialogue, was there ever really something said that wasn't in character for confused/tired/dehydrated/scared Joe-Shmoe's? Scripts tend to make every main character perfectly articulate for simplicity's sake, not realism.

    Methinks you've all been hollywood-nice-neat-ending brainwashed!... smile.gif

Is there anything those Canadians cant do? biggrin.gif

Seriously , a goodun . As for the Dialogue I dont think It can be left off the hook , but after the very rushed start I tended not to notice due to the quality of *Some of* the Acting

I thought it was good - yet another example of good Canadian film-making

I'm afraid I'd have to agree with Kali, I didn't like it at all, the whole film was too claustrophobic for my tastes, and the ending... it was one of those... I sat through this whole film for THAT?!

But hey that's just my opinion.

    Directors commentary for The Cube?

"and then they go into another one.. and another one.. and another one. they're pretty annoyed and feeling like the situation is hopeless right now, but I've one or two suprises left for them."

"see? see that? they get a bit of encouragement from the escape artist and then I destroy their hope, muhahaha, thats a tactic I learnt in orginality for directors school, I'll do that another eight times before the film is over, its great it is"

And I mean its a cube. Your camera direction, sound, lighting etc. is quite limited, so how the guy gets an hour and a half of talking over it is beyond me... sure as hell wouldn't want to further analyze the characters anyway (as said above Wurth was pretty decent, rest were abysmal and stereotyped)

Just to mention as well (before ppl get annoyed with me hehe).. I really don't hate this film, in fact I guess was enjoyable enough, I'm just ripping it to shreds because some people think its a serious cult film, when in reality its a pretty hilarious flimsy attempt at an original idea with some average effects now and then.

I don't think its a great film, but it does give some of the horrible feeling there must be when you get caught in something like that, that is sort of cool. But its definitely about character interaction and what happens when theres no law and you are in a tough environment. It reminds me very much of alfred hitch****s lifeboat (I think that was the name of it). But really Lord of the Flies makes this sort of screenplay look childish and shallow given the possiblities. Its far far far far too easy to just kill characters off. I get the feeling that the director is immensely proud and feeling superior everytime someone says "but you don't get to see whats outside or what the cube is about". "Ha, ha," replies the director (or should I be targeting the studio that possibily dummed down the script?) "but you don't get it, I'm so smart - this is an about the interplay of humans when on their own and in stress". Yes but hardly an elaborate investigation into the scenario.
