A new version of Big Brother could last forever.

German station RTL2, currently broadcasting a series lasting one year, is adapating the format on a much bigger scale - with no end date in mind.

The new show will be set in a purpose-built town and feature hundreds of regular people as the inhabitants. The town, currently being built outside Hamburg, will have its own forest, town square, shops and schools.

Producer Rainert Laux said that "the very best people" would be picked to live in the town and that all of them would be unemployed.

"We hope couples will get pregnant and family groups will interact with all the usual family frictions," said Laux. "They can do exams there if they want to go to school, learn languages or any other type of professional examination for a career and eventual employment."

He said that the main contestants could live there for decades, providing the show remains popular.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of cameras will capture every moment in the town. Live streaming will go out on the web 24 hours a day, and nightly highlight shows will air on RTL2.

It is unknown how much is being spent on the project.

Obivously, it would be a bizzare Big Brother!

I don't think I could literally watch it, let alone put myself into this BB! If it happens It'll be like "The Truman Show" which was the lamest excuse for a film ever! :(

Hmm, that seems a bit mental. What is the goal then for anyone willing to participate? Sounds exactly like the Truman Show alright. I hadn't even realised RTL2 were showing a yearlong version of BB. I might watch it some night nothing else is on.

Is there a prize or anything at the end of it? Or is it some kind of "social experiment"?

    Beat me to it!

This will almost definately come to England, imho.

I remember seeing those ringtone ads played about 6 times per ad break on MTV Germany about three years ago, thinking those kind of ads would never work here. But now they're everywhere.

Ideally, they'll include some sort of genetically engineered wolfman who lives in the forest and occasionally abducts and eats one of the inhabitants. I couldn't bring myself to watch anything less.

    I think it would work.
    • A few wannabe porn stars would ensure it'd get a porn channel; sex everywhere (in the houses, on the bonnets of cars, in the headmistress's office...)
    • Put some boy-racers in it. This'll kill off most of them. It'll also have massive viewing rating's, for the crashes, etc.
    • Do a "Challange TV" type of obstacle course for those trying to escape.
    • Certain camera's could be made pay-per-views, such as the one outside the chipper / pub, for the fights.

In Russia, there were several underground cities built, all powered by a nuclear power station. To my knowledge, only one remains.
In the US, they made an entire city, and it's one aim was to make a nuclear bomb.
I'd like to see how these guys do it. They may use a ghost town (one that was deserted during WW2), to freak out the people.
