digital camera recommendations?

I'm looking to get a digital camera soon, mostly for holiday snaps and so on. I'd like it to be good, but don't want to spend TOO much money. Has anyone any recommendations of particular models?
Also I'll be going to the U.S. in two months, does anyone know if I will get a better deal there?

    THANKS!

I've been using a Canon powershot S30 (3.2MP) for the last few years and it's been a great camera. I think the powershot series in general are decent cameras, great build quality, highly reliable, not too heavy on battery...

Theres an S45, S50 and now an S70 I think, the highest of which I think has a 7 or 8MP sensor in it.

I'm biased towards Canon a bit, I do like their ixus range too... My sister recently bought a minolta, MJ310 I think it is. Very decent looking camera too.

If you want to go up to a budget of about 8 or 9 hundred quid, I'd go for a Canon 300D. There are a few people on here with them and seem very happy with their purchase. Take a peek at www.cam-ireland.com (based in Germany, deliver to Ireland and are a whole lot cheaper than buying from Irish shops)

You will most certainly get a better deal in U.S. shops, only last year I got about €800 off a Sony digital video camera by buying it in america. Be careful with warranty though, not everything will come with an international warranty.

    ...just to add.
Be careful of customs when you return. If you get caught (As I did) you will have to pay the full Duty on the phone....on the spot. Can work out more expensive in the long run. Can't fool Customs either... every item legally imported into Europe has it's serial number in their computer.

    Best Of Luck!

duty on a phone? are you sure?

I was talking to the customs office not even a year ago and they told me that there is no duty on mobile phones.

On customs, when I was bringing back my camcorder, I just had it in my hand luggage, in a case I got for it on holiday. Had all the manuals, warranty, cables etc packed into the bottom of my checked in luggage. As far as they were concerned I had it going over there in the first place. Unless youre seriously taking the piss and coming back with a half dozen cameras in their boxes in your hand luggage I'd say you're ok.

if you want it for holiday pictures, depends on the type of holidays and what you will take pictures of. is it just for pictures of your friends with you, a few landscapes, typical 'snaps'

if so, the most important things will be camera size & battery power. most decent brand cameras released now are more than enough quality for regular 6x4 prints or for e-mailing.

    What's your budget?
Go into a good camera shop and hold and see how cameras in your budget feel and then go read the ones you like reviews on dpreview.com

Most digital cameras have a video function for making short videos, Pretty cool for holidays etc.

Just make sure the video function has sound as well as some don't
