sound hardware + mixing/editing software

Hello everybody. A few questions for people in the know about sound.

Basically, i do "sound engineering" for the drama society in college. They have some good equipment there, a 4.1 surround system and a nice big mixer board that takes up to 16 inputs etc etc.

However, other than making sound go up or down, you can't really do anything on the equipment, as there is no computer control. I'm interested in getting a laptop (mine) hooked up in there with some basic/advanced sound software so we can apply effects or at least make sound pan around the speakers.

I'm currently getting a Dell laptop. Is it possible to get a 4.1 (or more) sound card to install into the laptop to do this. If not, what equipment would be recommended to do this.

Also, what software would be recommended?

You could link the laptop up to an external extigy card which is a usb audigy. Dunno about software.
