Is my laptop Airport ready?

I have an oldish ibook laptop running OS 8.6 and i want it to connect to my home network via a wireless card. Now i have been informed that apple dont do those standard wireless cards anymore and i have to get those cards from a third party like ebay or buy and sell. This shouldnt be much of a problem I think because there seems to be plenty of people selling those cards on ebay. However im unsure that can those cards be made work with my laptop

I have a newer iBook running OS9.2 and it is connected wirelessly using the above means but when i tried to swap the card over to the older ibook it wouldnt work(It didnt even fit to the slot it was given but it had all the connections right etc) It looked like the right card but on the back of the box it says clear as day "Can only be installed in computers that are Airport ready"

So my conclusion is that the older ibook isnt Airport ready

So how do i make it airport ready is the question I have. It has the hardware slot for it so what am I doing wrong. The older ibook is a green clamp shell one that were pretty popular at the time so i dont think im alone here or else im doing something simple wrong

You need a pcmcia style airport card that slots in under the keyboard, and you plug the antenna internally to it

yeah you can pick em up on ebay noit cheap though, or else you could get a USB dongle, although trying to get one that works in OS9 would be a problem
the airoprt one you want is like this

Any 802.11b dongle thats compatible will work fine as well

yea thats the one i have allright, suppose ill try again to get it working
There must be someway of enabling the card to go live.

The disc i got with it tis a bit useless as it wont install anthing on it

prolly need to update the OS or the airport extensions are disabled ?

D'you have a burner ? maybe you could tranfer the system folder with the right extensions from the one it works on to the laptop to test ?

    Its def a software issue.

The disk i got with the card wont install on the computer and this in turn wont let the card work properly. I tried copying over some of the drivers and others application files that are the newer laptop to the older one but it still wont work

Any ideas i can get a package that would just install what i need easily and simply on OS 8.6, or else im going to have to pay some apple guys to do it for me.

updating the OS is out because of the limited hardware on the computer.

    Limited hardware ???

Erm don't think there would be any problem running 9.2 or even OSX .. 9.2 will definetly have the airport drivers though.

Should mention do a firmware update on the ibook before trying os9

Any Ibook as far as im aware can run the latest offerings, even the newest version of X should work (be it slowly).

you should be able to copy your 9.2 system folder directly from the old Ibook and then choose It as the system folder to start from (prolly need to rename it first though) .. dont see there being any probs and you'll have all the right extensions in there..
