Is there any way i can find out the IP address of a webpage that im on? For example if im on google.com is there a way i can see the pages IP address so i can link to the IP address and not the DNS name?

Are there any good tools which can do this?

    TIA

start > run > command or cmd
    then ping www.google.com

Not sure i explained that right... :o

Will it make a difference if its www.google.com/1/2 etc...

I mean the ACTUAL page im on, not the main page. Can i directly link to www.google.com/1/2 with the IP address or will it simply return the IP for google.com ?

Go learn how the internet works.

www is the hostname of a computer in the google.com domain (actually in google's case, that's a litle simplistic, but correct for the sake of argument). This computer has a specific IP address. Anything after the backslash is a reference to a file on that server.

    So when you access http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/index.php,
you're asking www.boards.ie to give you the file "index.php", located in the /vbulletin/ directory of that server.

    an equivalent Url is http://82.195.131.130/vbulletin/index.php

Managed to sort what i was trying to do....

Must try better forums next time, instead of having everyone attempt to insult your intelligence than help you answer your question

Was your question not answered? Most frustration here comes from people asking questions about things that they haven't read up on. RTFM isn't a commonly-used abbreviation for no reason.

God knows, look at my first 500 posts, I asked some doozies. If you can't take some flack, I'd advise you turn off the internet and don't bother participating. You'll find boards.ie is a lot easier on you than most others.

use nslookup to resove names (most versions of windows have it)

sometimes you get more than one ip address because they have backup servers. eg:
    Name: vpn.noc.netsystem.com
    Addresses: 212.31.242.107, 212.31.242.121, 212.31.242.113, 212.31.242.110
    212.31.242.109, 212.31.242.108

There are also online tools eg: http://www.whois.net

In fairness, if you're going to ask how to get the IP address of a webpage, someone's going to take you by the hand and tell you (hopefully in a nice way) to get a clue. Like seamus, I've asked some doozies in my time but I tend to go and get a clue when I'm told I haven't got one rather than getting huffy (hopefully you're not getting huffy). Seamus even provided the clue for free while explaining. Back in the days when I didn't understand this, I'd have understood it after the explanation above.

Just for completeness sake - not all sites allow you to connect via IP, one example is where multiple sites are on the same server and all have the same name (eg: index.html) ...

The saddest part of this is that i've setup an IIS server in a similar way loads of times. My wrecked brain seemed to forget about the whole directory structure thing.... :o

I DID get a bit frustrated a things like "go learn how the internet works" and optikus' intriguing reply....

Basically i was trying to bypass some bull**** website redirection thing and link to the website via the IP address but it had several directories - id been trying so long that when i eventually posted the question i couldnt even think what i was writing, and now that my head has cleared up im embarrased that i for a few minutes was asking how to get a bloody IP address of a webpage.... :o

    ..and i wasnt even drunk....

Do you do ads for master card?

    your comments are priceless!!

juts cos you have a post count of 8000+ doesn't mean you automatically graduate to the school of putting people down.

Maybe the guy genuinely couldn't find the info he wanted or just thought he would ask people here as the info he found online was a tad confusing, as the case generally is for general internerd users.

Somewhere out there is a project to BACKUP the internet. Apparently there are copyright implications...

Maybe not, but if someone with that post count gives you a gentle tap of his neg rep wand....

You're lucky that Seamus is a nice guy, show some respect young sir. ;)

This is great. I don't even have to defend myself anymore.

Now, where are my wenches with grapes and fans?

mancman, there's a difference between being short with people and putting them down. If he had looked for the information, then I'd be worried. You do use google? Such information isn't exactly difficult to come by.

I'm not in the habit of being short with people, then telling them to **** off. On the other hand, I'm not in the habit of sugar-coating things and stopping myself from being curt on the off-chance that someone is a little sensitive to being told plain truth. I did in fact answer his question. As I say, that's a hell of a lot more than anyone would get on other sites (or even from most members on this site).

Beleive me, post count means nothing here.

I found out the hard way that boards.ie is full of people dying to make themselves feel superior by making other people feel stupid. I think its called superiority complex or some ****e. Anyways, why bother answering a silly question with "look it up"? your post is as much a waste of effort/resources/etc as his in the end.

I don't think boards.ie is full of people like that, just a few. I sure there's alot of people who read his reply and think that about him.

ok can this end please, have jusr read through this and have a few points to make, firstly question was answered, secondly, with a bit of research it could have been answered by self but this is a messaging board and as such is an arena to ask questions you do not have answers to. personally i dont believe that it is fair to criticise anothers questions, is better to not reply than castigate, yes is always easy to laugh at a question when you know the answer yourself.

reminds me of the amount of times i have asked for the salt when its been right in front of me

    that my two cent
