Ehh, lads, they are all wussie films! Check out Ring, and get yourself some new under pants wink.gif

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭ObeyGiant

Ring.. really didn't scare me all that much. I'm the kind of person gets quite affected by scary movies, but this didn't really do it for me.

What good scary movies are there out there?
Rosemary's Baby - this is scarier for girls, for obvious reasons.
The Haunting (original) - No special effects, no Catherine Zeta Jones, and surprisingly scary.
Candyman - terrified me first time I saw it.. didn't look in a mirror for two months
Poltergeist II - Kane scared the bejesus out of me.
Exorcist III - Some images in this were pretty messed up.. I hate statues that change, surefire way to scare the pants off me (although you don't have to scare me to get my pants off.. whe whe whe zzzzzzzzzzz)

I think the Shining is still up there in the list of great horrors.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    Definetly the Candyman...

Clive Barker is a ****ing genious when it comes to horror...

And, another rather obvious one: Hellraiser

Event Horizon was kick ass, but someone stole my copy of the film. frown.gif

I also remember seeing Aliens when I was about ten, and I got the ****ing ****e scared out of me...

    And of course: The Shining...

    You'd have to divide what is scary into two categories;

    'psychologically' scary and 'scary' scary

psychological horror movies would affect you more than simple monster/ghost/teen slasher flics since your mind is occupied with what made them scary long after you've watched them.

whilst simple scary movies just provide a few cheap thrills and surprises, generally going by a ridiculously predictable formula.

anyway, enough analysis. Heres my two films:

    psychological:

Stir Of Echoes - good god this is one messed up film; there are some genuinely freaky parts in it. I think it was so disturbing because it stuck very faithfully to the book.

    plain scary:

Hellraiser - heh, no comparision; Clive Barker's original one is still impressively scary nearly 15 years on, the effects are excellent and really turn your stomach in some parts (Frank's reforming corpse being one).

Definitely, Event Horizon for me. for the simple reason (apart from its content) that when myself and a mate went to see it in the cinema we hadn't heard anything about it only it was a sceince fiction film. We were trying to get tickets for something else, can't remember what, so we ended up going to see Event Horizon. Literally, I was on the edge of my seat for the whole film (pity about the cack ending). It was the whole I haven't a ****ing clue what's going to happen next factor.

    *** Off topic ***
Going to see movies that you have heard absolutely nothing about so you can base your opinion entirely on your own is always a good thing. I went to see the Dish last week, very good film, light hearted and not taking itself seriously. Good if you're looking for something that's not run of the mill.

    *** Back to Topic ***

Halloween I still holds itself these days. Its the whole "he's behind you you stupid *****" and that music and the Donald Pleasance factor.

Candyman is also pretty cool, still catch myself in front of the mirror thinking, Candyman, yea me bollix. Like to see you say it 5 times, and Hellraiser, don't watch after a large feed.

Event Horizen wasn'tthat bad, but it is in there (most movies in the past few years have not been able to make me go "oh ffs, what the hell!!")

In terms of psychological it's gotta be The Blair Witch Project for me - spooked me so bad I didn't want to go home cause there's a forest beside my house.

Slasher/Gore - not sure I could pick one. I enjoy watching them, but they don't usually leave much of a lasting impression.

Event Horivon had a nice mix of psych and gore so I thought it was a well good film - seeing all those people with their eyes gouged out and stuff was disturbing!

    All the best!

the shining, halloween, the fog, psycho...
Don't you just love movies that make you feel down right uncomfortable?!
eg. texas chainsaw massacre, last house on the left (so I'm told, any one seen this?)etc

so, not necessarily horror movies...but freaky, uncomfortable movies.....anyone? any recomendations?
