Harddisk woes

The below happened me today and wasted the best part of a day...

I have 2 pcs networked at home, anyway a family friend was at me to fix up their pc, i said id give it a reformat and freshen it up.. they bring it over

i try the win cd boot using their machine, their machine is about 5years old and the cd player couldnt read the windows install cd... so i was debating whether to transfer a new cd player onto the machine, but decided against as the OS was fukkered... so i decided to bung the harddisk into my machine, set it as master and i think i changed my main HD to slave (i had to try a few different things... anyway go for the cd boot install and reformat, reads disc fine, reformat... nope dies at 100%... tried different types of partitions and quickpartition etc... a few times, no joy won't work...

so i decide feck it, maybe il try to set it to slave, boot into my windows and format it from win explorer (didnt have a dos boot around to try fdisk)...

anyway I get the following message
Veryifying DMI Pool Data... it hung
    And it hung and hung.
I eventually returned both my HD's to the pc, and same thing...

so i did some reading online (2nd pc) and after the few basics decided an MBR might be worth a go... didn't work, had to reformat and reinstall..
then would you believe i decide to set up my 2nd HD... set as slave, detected fine, windows boots fine..
even though the harddisk is detected it's boot record or something must b fried as the disc isnt showing up, only in device manager where i populate the volumes... all 0MB 0MB 0MB... the mbr is obviously fukked too!

luckily i read advice here before about active@ file recovery and my storage files which were on this disc could mostly be recovered...

    but what happened?

i presume I'll be able to reformat it and all will be well... but im completely confused as to what went on...

and for some reason I don't think it's a good idea to pop my friends HD near my pc's again...

i wrote that fairly fast.. excuse the bad grammer ;)
    any ideas?

10 bucks say you tried to format the drive as FAT.
Try formatting it as NTFS, HTH.

I have suggested using a different file system, not a different partition.
You can send my ten bucks to a charity of your choice.
