Simple Burning Q

OK, I'm guessing that the Q is simple, and I'm just stooopid so here goes:

I bought myself a second hand dvd burner a few weeks back, and installed it with the help of some of the people on this board (thanks again!) so I ordered my blank DVDs like a good girl and waited patiently for them to come.
In this time, I've gotten a few movies in .avi form, and after doing a bit of research I figured out that I would have to convert the .avi to dvd format or something along those lines.

So I got Cucusoft converter, and I waited a horribly long amount of time for the file to convert and then tried to burn it as a Video DVD using Nero. About 1 minute in, the drive pops open and an error message comes up. I thought that it might have been a once off so I try again, but the same thing happens.

Could it be the DVDs themselves? (Datawrite, 4x -R ) or am I missing something?

Any help should be appreciated :)

    Pioneer A06

Actually I made a mistake in the intial post, I was a ickle confuzed! After converting the file, I tried burning it with Nero, but it didn't recongnise the file (either the .avi or the dvd converted one) so I was actually trying to burn it with Sonic RecordNow (came with the computer initially)

Currently trying to burn again (couldn't remember the exact error message) and is going ok now.

I'm gonna feel really stupid if it works correctly now :o

Well I planned on sacrificing another DVD in the name of getting the error message, but the damn thing worked this time

One quick Q instead: The converter I'm using takes around 6 hours, which I think is insane. Anyone know of a better/quicker converter? (I'm using the Cucusoft Convert)

    Thanks

TBH.. it not the actually the encoding software that really makes the difference, it probably down to your processor.. you can get converter quicker with some apps, but with less quality and vice versa.

Well, seeing as you have Nero, you could try their converter (Nero Vision Express 2), which may help, but as previously posted it's all down to processor speed..

    Some programs will work faster.

    What is your processor?

Some programs may encode a tiny miniscule bit faster at the same bit rate.. but really if you want it done quicker you will be getting less quality.. so unless you are mass producing DVDs constantly .. id go for a longer and better quality encoder.
